I eat here fairly frequently. Normally, this place is awesome. Lately, the service has been shockingly horrible. I mean laughably horrible. I brought a guest from out of town for lunch. Picture this: we walk into a completely empty Baguette Magic a solid hour before closing. No employees in sight. We wait around looking at the menus for ~3min before any staff makes an appearance. Even once the 2 staff members come out from the back room, we were not greeted for a solid 5 minutes. I'm honestly not sure why I even bothered to stick around up until this point. We order two sandwiches and an almond croissant. The croissant was the reason I wanted to show my friend this restaurant. We place our order and waited 15 minutes. For cold sandwiches? While we waited, one person, who came in after us, was served. Then (the part that REALLY gets me) a couple comes in and orders the remaining almond croissants, which is fine because they set aside a croissant for my friend and I, right? WRONG. Despite the fact that we had already paid for our croissant, they sold the remaining batch. Upon questioning the lady behind the counter, we found that our sandwiches had been ready for quite some time, but the employees just didn't feel it was necessary to let us know. What!? Additionally, the employee tried to tell us that we never paid for the croissant. Fortunately, we had our receipt and were able to prove that we had. Because all of the almond croissants had been given away AFTER WE PAID, she offered us a croissant that was $1 cheaper (it's the principle of the thing). This was the worst customer service I've ever experienced here. There has been a significant downward trend in overall experience at this restaurant, which is extremely disappointing. Get it together. The food is too good to be this awful. The owner...

Such a nice looking place. So much potential. But the good stops there.

Staff smiled and took our order at the standup register. After discussion and clearly stated selection they rang in the wrong item. My “favorite” (sarcasm emphasized) is when they unabashedly watch the “guilt tip” screen. Don’t you just love the concept of tipping at a register, not for service, because that’s nonexistent. Simply a staff compensation entitlement. Nothing but a social pressure surcharge to enhance profitability. Then the audacity to pre-load buttons for 20, 22 and 25%. As if ordering at a counter and being asked to clear your own table deserves a 25% surcharge!

At the table we were provided with the wrong entree. When we said it was the wrong item the staff person looked at us like, “What should I do?” Finally they asked “Would you like me to get you the correct item?” Seemed like a brilliant idea. When the correct item finally came it was rather awful. Scrambled eggs and arugula slathered in some mayonnaise/dijon goo on a baguette, it was something to simply leave behind.

Perhaps the best part of the experience after being greeted with the tip-begging screen were the signs on each of the tables:

“ BAKING MAGIC BAKERY & CAFE Please help our team by clearing your table to the bin located to the left of the l back counter. Thank You!”

Management, you have some real opportunities for improvement. Great location, easy parking, nice inside. Time for training, rethinking the tipping scheme, and helping your chef plan better menu.

Oh, and you might want to rethink charging three and a half dollars plus tax and tip for a...

Review for Baguette Magic 🫶🏻

Overall, great experience! 🥖I got a baguette with bacon, egg, white cheddar and garlic. Which garlic makes everything amazing! Food was yummy, I’d love to go back and try some pastry’s- 8/10

☕️My coffee was a Vietnamese coldbrew which means it was like instant coffee, cold foam on top of cold brew. So lots of caffeine there. I also got caramel flavoring in the coffee. It had a bit of a weird aftertaste, but it definitely was strong coffee, which I do appreciate a good cup of strong coffee. If you’ve ever had instant coffee, the flavor of the foam was comparable to that. Which is not my favorite taste. It was iced obviously because of the cold brew. I probably would never get that coffee drink again, but it was good. It just was a lot. Overall I’d rate the coffee- 5/10

🕍Restaurant experience: it seems like a good place to go with a group of people, there was a lot of seating options. Since it was a Church, that was obviously refurbished, I thought they would be really playing off the church aesthetic- and have the glass windows or something that kind of played tribute to that. But it just looked like a normal restaurant inside. I felt like it could’ve been way more aesthetic so overall, i was not really impressed with the inside. It was nice that they had lots of tables. Vibe was average- 6/10

Every time we come to Charleston, at least 1 to 2 times a year, we always come here multiple times. This year, only once. I’m not saying I wouldn’t come back, still one of my favorite places, but…we finally had a bad experience here. I asked for a bacon and cheese croissant and she kept saying bacon, egg and cheese. I said no, I hate eggs. Well I don’t know how to do that. I asked for the eggs on the side then my friend will eat them. Ok food comes and I have a croissant with bacon only, eggs on the side with cheese on them😬I asked the girl who brought it to me to tell them the cheese is suppose to be on the croissant not eggs, the kitchen staff told her they can’t do it that way. Soooo I get up (believe me I am not a Karen) and asked for cheese on my bacon and cheese croissant. You would have thought I asked for a kidney or a lung. And the manager (I guess? Wearing a black shirt, winked at me and says we will fix and bring it to your table. Finally it came back to me. This time was right, and they took the eggs and cheese off my plate and replaced them with plain scrambled eggs. I should have gotten a pic of it but forgot. Thank you. We also got a couple pastry items to go. Still recommend, I know everyone can have off days and I definitely will come back next time.

A last-minute decision that turned into a wonderful surprise. I was a little leery of going to someplace that specialized in delicious baked goods on my diet. I shouldn't have been concerned in the slightest. The menu was varied and had a number of healthy options. Including the most amazing and beautiful fruit cup. We ordered and sat down at the bar to watch everybody cook our breakfast. Sitting at the bar was a great decision because we got to see all the other tasty food come out. It gave us lots of ideas about what to eat next time. The coffee was good and strong from a communal pot that was self serve. My eggs were fluffy and perfectly cooked but the real star of the show was the baked goods. My croissant was beautifully flaky and delicate. My husband's baguette was chewy and soft. It was worth breaking the diet just a little bit to have a bite or two. We will definitely be back and probably order some baked goods to take home as well. A great breakfast or lunch place.

We recently visited Baguette Magic for breakfast and tried a few dishes: the Chef’s Hash, the Bep Sandwich on a croissant, and the Avocado Toast. The standout was definitely the Bep Sandwich on the croissant—absolutely to die for! The croissant was perfectly flaky, and the combination of flavors was spot on. It’s a must-try if you visit. The Avocado Toast came in second. It was super fresh and well-seasoned, with the avocado spread just right. The radish was a great touch. The Chef’s Hash was our least favorite. While it was decent, it didn’t quite stand out compared to the other two dishes. Overall, Baguette Magic offers a solid breakfast, and the Bep Sandwich stealing the show.
