Hattie's Tap & Tavern — Restaurant in Charlotte

As someone who has worked in restaurants and bars for 14 years, I will happily vouch that Hattie’s is tied at first for my favorite bar in town. I came in earlier and was greeted by lots of friendly staff, an incredible beer and liquor selection, and great people hanging out. I was fortunate enough to meet the owner, Jackie, a few weeks ago and was even more solidified in my support of this bar. It’s a shame it has taken me so long to leave a review. Tonight, walking in, I had friendly regulars greeting me before even walking in the building. I masked up, walked inside and the guy working the door, Quinn was super friendly. I approached the bar and was greeted very warmly by the bartenders Wendy and Rich. They made me feel very at home and provided great conversation and service. Joseph the bar back was working hard keeping everything stocked and keeping the bar clean. Saw no empty cups anywhere even on the patios. They have classic video games, a pool table, a great back and front patio and are dog friendly. Incredible place to go to. The bartenders though really are some of the best I’ve seen at any bar. After years in the industry, I watch how everyone does their job so I can compare my own quality of service. Hattie’s has some of the best in Charlotte. Wendy is the sweetest bartender I’ve ever met. She is passionate, caring, intelligent and quick. Rich is full of bar knowledge, polite, always has a positive attitude and is quick as hell also. I have had the pleasure to work with Rich before and he was a great influence on the bartender that I am today. Loved this place til I left my card here on New Year's and when I went to retrieve it tonight the lady told me the bartenders have to pay for the open tabs at the end of the night out of their own pocket. Maybe y'all should rethink that policy. My tab was only $4 but it's a messed up policy, can't support that.

Edit to reply: that's what the lady behind the bar tonight told me about an hour ago, so maybe someone should let her know that it's not true and to not tell people that because it made me feel awful. I left a $20 tip because I felt so bad, now I'm thinking she just said that to keep the tip, although when I asked she assured me the bartenders from that night would get my tip. So now I feel awful, lied to, and swindled...

I give this place 2 stars because the event at Hattie’s last night (11/15) “dance or die” is what saved this rating from being 1 star. Everything was great until the bartender gave us grief about not tipping immediately. We grabbed our drinks to make a quick toast and the bartender (white male with mustache wearing a tank top) gave us such grief about “not tipping immediately”. Truly an a-hole moment from him. It almost killed our mood but luckily the music was amazing and brought us back up immediately.
