Edit: it's always so good!!!
Before I start I need to give a shout out to Estéban(sp?) He was very helpful and friendly with our order. All the staff was wonderful but special shoutout to Esteban for going above and beyond for an unforgettable experience.
Let me set the stage: you just worked your job 10 days in a row. Straight up your new boss forgot to schedule you a weekend. But now, it's your day off. You find yourself in the Plantation Market strip mall and see "Somi Sushi" the open sign flashes. Your mouth waters. Sushi craving sets in. Check the clock. It's practically 8:30 and you work in restaurants so you DO NOT want to break the cardinal rule of coming in 1 hour/30 mins to closing. Reluctantly you walk in, it's been 10 straight 8+ hour days and you havent eaten since 1, you need this food rn.
I walked in with my partner who works at The One (check it out) and I begged if I could order. they were happy to do it and I got take out (duh) and my goodness (don't tell but it's better than New Zealand Café shhhhh) it was soooooo good
The Somi Roll, if you like everything like me, is not to be overlooked. Possibly one of those "we get this everytime" items for sure. I also got the Sushi combo I believe it was called the one that's 7 pcs of Sushi and 1 tuna roll. Yo this place is fire.
Wasabi was high quality and frankly I suspect they're pickling ginger in house. I will be dreaming of coming back. Also came with a soup I drank it...
Read moreThis and Yume in South End are our go-to sushi joints. While I live way closer to Yume, Somi is also of excellent quality and value. If I can convince my wife, I'll make the 25 minute drive here instead of the 10 to Yume most days.
I'll start with two minor complaints for the new folks: An order of sashimi is for 3 pieces. An order of nigiri is for 2 pieces. On my first visit, I had no idea how many pieces of sashimi or nigiri you get. Hopefully this helps any ordering anxiety or questions. Packaging is comically large, almost excessive. I definitely appreciate the side salads, miso soup, etc, but getting three stuffed grocery bags for a dinner for three is a bit unwieldy.
Now the good stuff: Takoyaki is a staple order. Get it in a bento box for an even better value. Sushi and Sashimi Combo (10 pc nigiri, 15 pc sashimi) is fresh and a solid value at $35 Tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet) is good but under-seasoned IMO. It would be acceptable if we were eating it hot at the restaurant, without COVID. But lack of salting/brine before frying and then travel back home made the katsu drier than it ideally would be. But I know that takeout can be unforgiving for many foods. We need to try more maki but enjoyed the few we've had. I think the amount of sauces they add work for the Charlotte area, but might be a touch heavy-handed for folks who overwhelmingly prefer...
Read moreIt was about time!!!!! I think this place deserves more than 5 stars!! After a looong and challenging week at work, we had to end Friday on a pleasant note and that is exactly what we got when we had dinner at Somi Sushi last night! Like I always say: never judge a book by its cover! This place is located in a small business mall and is just as small as it is cozy. But the food was out of this world!! We ordered a Bento box and three different rolls. The bento box presentation was elegant and had a couple of interesting and delicious sauces, the tempura is the best we have had in NC so far in our 2 years living here. The salmon was fresh, the sushi rolls were cut the perfect size and the presentation was very appealing to the eyes and the flavors were a burst of joy in every bite. Is not a fancy place but is perfect for a date night or simply to enjoy the best sushi in town!! We are on a mission to find more places like this one, as sushi lovers, I highly recommend this place and we are adding it to our favorite list! Price was reasonable, considering that you are getting the best and most fresh sushi that we have...
