Poor experience with food quality lead to a very poor experience with the owner/management. Visited in store around 8:30am on a Friday to disarray and a stressed out worker. No worries, made my selection from the limited items and got a loaf of sliced bread (chose 9 grain as that was the only one cool enough to slice). Worker was apologetic for the lack of items and was appreciative of someone being understanding.
Get home and we are not at all impressed with the quality. The scones are rock hard, tiny, stale and worse of all - flavorless. The chocolate croissant is stale. The muffin is meh but fine. I realize she didn't slice the bread before we checked out, oh well. Oh wait, it was pre-sliced that is great! Not very good and has an odd crumble to it though. We spent around $33 on 2 scones, 2 muffins, 2 croissants, and the loaf and only the muffins were really edible. We were concerned that these were leftover items as they were far from fresh tasting.
So, I called Bread and Butter and spoke with the worker that checked me out - I wanted to speak to a manager to get the situation resolved but nobody was available on a Friday morning. I wanted to know if I had to bring the items back for a refund and she was flustered as she didn't really have an answer for me. After we talked for a little bit she was able to pull up the order and thankfully chose to just refund it over the phone - rather than having to wait for a manager to reach out to me. She was exceptionally helpful in this as reading other reviews indicates they do not often give refunds.
I reached out to the emails I could find to inquire about a receipt of my refund to ensure it was processed. The owner/management emailed back and was fairly dismissive but standard in their approach. They assured me we did not receive leftovers and that they would approach the employees to fix these issues. They thanked me for bringing this to their attention. To me, this is dismissive because it does not address the concerns in a reasonable manner. The employees are simply doing what they are instructed to do. It is up to management and owners to ensure quality from top to bottom. Poor food quality means management is not MANAGING.
I do take issue with how Bread and Butter chose to respond to my wife's review. In their response, they mistakenly reveal that the loaf of bread we received was in fact a day old loaf (that we were charged full price for). We suspected this because it was crumbly, not stored properly (bad quality giftwrap plastic bag), and sliced before purchase - I was glad to see this verified through their admission that the fresh bread for that day was too hot to slice. They do not date mark their prepackaged loaves so that they can trick customers in to paying full price for old bread. And before they respond and try to pin it on the employee, they are clearly instructed to handle these transactions in that manner by Management. This is standard operating procedure.
Additionally, Bread and Butter claims my wife left a negative review after we received a refund. She posted the review on Friday morning and we received proof of a refund on Saturday or Sunday. This was apparent to them when they responded to the review and shows a continual desire to misrepresent the facts in a public space in order to deceive their consumers. None the less, the fact we received a refund for the awful quality 'food' does not negate our right to warn other consumers of these gross tactics.
We have watched the quality of their food DRAMATICALLY decline in the past year during our decreasingly frequent visits. That mustard gruyere scone was literally one of my favorite things in the world. The past 3 times I've had it, it has been flavorless and stale. Bread and Butter used to be so good that we often just said "lets give them one more chance". We will no longer be visiting Bread and Butter since management decided to handle this situation in such a...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe had the most delightful, dissociative fugue-like visit to Bread & Butter, during which we bought basically everything. We were visiting town for a family trip, so we stocked the kitchen with bread for dinner and snacking, got some pantry goods, flowers, pastries, a breakfast sandwich, and more that Iām not naming.
Everything was FANTASTIC. My sister-in-law had talked about the cheese and black pepper sourdough for two years (we are a food-loving family, thank you very much) ā and even after that hype, it exceeded all expectations. So good. The ānot quite whiteā also was incredible; such a good country-style loaf.
All the pastries ā ham & cheese croissant, mustard & gruyĆØre scone, chocolate cherry cookie, salted chocolate chip cookie, cinnamon roll, and flourless brownie were each special individually and fully enjoyed by all.
The breakfast sandwich was delicious. The flavor combo of the sweetness of the tomato jam, with the savory herb butter on the cheesy grits bread was so memorable. My only suggestion would be just a pinch or two more of salt ā in the herb butter, or on the egg, maybe ā as the tomato jamās sweetness won out over the saltiness of the ham.
And the Terra Flower Farm bouquet! We visited on 7/14, traveled a few hours, and on 7/23 (eight days later!) most of the flowers were still in tip-top shape.
Would drive the 2.5 hrs from Columbia to Chattanooga just...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreHad a bagel from this place (via Provisions, the coffee shop at the Edwin) that was just circular white bread. Had it been labelled as bagel-shaped bread, I wouldn't have an issue...but it wasn't. It was just light-fluffy white bread in a bagel shape labelled as a bagel. Nothing messes up my morning like expecting a chewy, tough bagel with cream cheese, and getting a mouthful of pleasant, fluffy bread. Bagels should be a task to eat. They should taste good, but they're supposed to be tough - like the leathery hands of a hard working old man. A good bagel should almost make you want to stop eating it because it's a borderline unpleasant experience. Not these bagels. These are bagels for people who weren't allowed to play in the dirt when they were kids. I'll stay far away.
Please don't let my opinion stop you from enjoying this place if you love it, though. And you should try it for yourself. I'm just a cranky old man with grey hairs in his beard.
NOTE: Previously I had some additional thoughts on "muffin" that was just white bread with frosting. Turns out that IS from a different place called The Bread Basket. I'll be staying away from that place too.
To the owner: I've uploaded a photo from your google reviews of a bagel. You know you sell them. I know you sell them. Anyone looking through your reviews knows...
