This was the last place my family visited on our Chattanooga getaway and were very glad that we did.
Please excuse the amount of food we ordered, we didn’t eat all of it and wanted to try a little bit of everything.
I’ll start with the food and sauces.
We tried all of the sauces with the winners between my wife, son, and I were Sweet & Goopy, Hot Lips, and Classic BBQ.
Sweet and Goopy reminded my son and I of Buddy’s Bqq sauce which is not an insult we love their sauce. Classic Bqq was a less sweet version and also great. Hot Lips in my opinion is not a bbq sauce but holy crap this stuff is amazing on their tacos. We bought a bottle of Hot Lips and will have a bottle of that in our fridge at all times. It’s got an excellent spice that we loved. The other sauces were mostly vinegar so if that’s your thing then you’re covered.
Rib sampler - Meat fell off the bone with great flavor.
Brisket Jalapeño Poppers - Awesome, I added Sweet and Goopy and Hot Lips to some of them and it was great.
Sausage Sample - Good, not amazing a little dry. Bbq sauce to the rescue.
Smoked Chicken Wings - Super good, excellent smoke flavor and cooked perfectly.
Bbq sandwich and Mac and Cheese - Really good, son made a comment to the extent that the Mac and Cheese actually didn’t suck and was good. Teenagers…
Bbq Pork Plate with Crispy Potatoes and Okra Chips - pulled pork had great smoke flavor and not dry. Crispy potatoes and Okra chips were very good. Okra is not my favorite, but I could eat it cooked like that all day.
Spicy Pork Tacos - Amazing, don’t sleep on their tacos. The lime crema that came on the tacos was incredible and the red salsa had great flavor. Seriously solid tacos. Also copious amounts of Hot Lips was used on these.
Atmosphere was great, you feel right at home and our waitress was a complete sweetheart and very attentive. Also they have goats with free cabbage to feed them, need I say more?
Also in a great location right off the interstate. Highly recommend this place to anyone.
The only complaint I have is that they don’t have some kind of sampler platter to try all of the meats with a few sides. I’d pay whatever they’d ask for it, I just think it simplify the ordering process. Not a big deal not taking a...
Read moreWhile visiting Chattanooga, we decided on Sugars Ribs as our first dinner in town. We picked it because it was one of the best rated BBQ places in town and has a nice view of the city.
For our main dish, we ordered the “Q for 2 BBQ Sampler Plate”. The breakdown for the plate is:
Pulled Pork: 3/5 - Decent but not a ton of flavor, smoked or otherwise.
Chopped Brisket: 2/5 - on the dryer side, also a lack of flavor.
Spare Ribs: 3/5 - Fall of the bone tender but like everything else so far, not much flavor.
Jalapeño Cheddar Saussage: 3.5/5 - Nice jalapeño flavor and snap to the casing when bitten into, again a big lack of smoke flavor.
We also got a few sides and the breakdown for those is:
Crispy potatoes: 4.5/5 - These were hands down the best part of the meal. Perfectly cooked, seasoned well, absolutely delicious.
Mac-n-cheese: 2.5/5 - bland, no crispy cheese “crust” on top, very disappointing.
Mo’ Rockin’ Stew: 4/5 - This was also a highlight of the meal. Nice flavors, generous amount of ingredients, would definitely order again.
Cornbread: 2/5 - Not “hard as a rock” but definitely dry and like most other things, a serious lack of flavor.
Overall, I think Sugar’s trades more on their view more than the quality of their food. I didn’t see/smell any smokers running outside when we pulled up and that should have been a clue. I feel like most of the cooking happens in the kitchen, then put on the smoker for a few minutes to be able to say they are smoked, as evidenced by none of the food having any visible smoke ring.
I definitely would not come back here, there are much better BBQ places in town and thankfully we found them later...
Read moreFood was amazing! We've been eating at Sugar's since they opened. It's a little out of our way so we don't make as often as we'd like. Every experience has been delicious. Rotisserie wood fired chicken, the corn on the cob is buttery and perfectly smoked. We tried the tacos this time - complex flavors of the radishes, slaw, cilantro-lime mayo, wood grilled chicken on a homemade taco - the real surprise to us the fried okra ( not breaded) was a new favorite! Our kids love the beans, sausage mini sandwiches and the Mac & cheese. The spicy slaw was delicious, but not spicy to me. Their cornbread is good with little bits of jalepeno, but not too hot for the kids. I usually enjoy the rotisserie chicken, but so glad I tried something different - absolutely loved my tacos!!! New favorite! Hubby was equally happy with his brisket tacos. We love the jukebox, sitting on swivel bar stools (there are booths inside and picnic tables outside on the deck overlooking the city), in the restaurant with THE Best View. We like to take out if town friends here - an all around wonderful restaurant with a perfect view and atmosphere. Casual, comfortable, and delicious. Staff was friendly, helpful, polite and attentive. Even offered us some food to feed the goats. They have 6 goats outside (rumor has it to keep kudzu down). Goats were fun for the kids to watch, pet, and feed some cabbage. They also have a party room under the main floor, I'm going to have to keep...
