March 2021 Metro Diner is one of my favorite spots. Especially during the events of 2020 & 2021. What I'd like to sing the praises of today is their delivery.
While working from home over the last year I've ordered from Metro Diner at least half a dozen times for lunch. Not only is the food expertly prepared but it's also exceptionally packaged for delivery from my experiences. Metro Diner uses a ventilated container that keeps the food from turning soggy while it's out for delivery. I've ordered both burgers and club sandwiches that have arrived perfectly No soggy bread, buns or fries.
So Kudo's to Metro Diner. Keep up the good work! May 2020 I've been a fan of the Metro Diner since I discovered them down in Charlotte, NC about 4 years ago. The one in Charlotte, NC (Pineville) was a hard 5 Stars back then and I honestly expect nothing less than that up here....
So little story. The Metro Diner in Greenbrier isn't the first MD in the area. There's another one out in Suffolk that's been there a year longer. I was aware of the Suffolk one, but not the Greenbrier one. That's what happens when you work overnights for 2.5 years. By the time I found out about the Greenbrier location it had been open 6 months... I was kinda shocked. It's easy to become unplugged from the things you used to be top of.
Anyway I'm rambling. After switching back to the day shift last summer I made a point of adding Metro Diner to my short list for lunch. Upon arriving I noticed Metro Diner had built their own building here instead of occupying an empty suite in a shopping center. Dining was available inside and in a small terrace outside on the left as you're facing the building. Upon entering second thing I noticed was this location is a little smaller than the one in Charlotte, cramped even, and there was no coffee bar. No coffee bar you say? Yes, I say. The coffee bar in Charlotte is awesome! Think of it like a salad bar, but all kinds of coffee. Third, this place loud! I could hear everyone at every table around me plus the staff working in the open air kitchen. There's no carpet, the sound bounces everywhere. When it's full, it's loud, and buddy was it lunch time full.
We had a party of 4 and it took us about 20 minutes to get seated. We were seated on the row right behind the hostess station, which I guess you could call the 2nd row in the dining room. I don't recall our serves name however she was an older lady and very personable. She'd been waiting tables for a while and knew her way around, knew the menu and the specials. Our drinks were ordered right away and by the time she was back with them we were ready to order our entrees.
I ordered the Metro Club sandwich with fries. 2 of my coworkers split a Fried Chicken & Waffle platter. The last one had a Bacon Cheeseburger. As we waited the place started to clear out a bit, which thankfully started to bring the noise level down.
Our food was perfect. My Metro Club was a true triple decker club sandwich, with all the trimmings of a club. It was cut in half instead of quarters, and came with fresh cut fries. Delicious!
My co-workers who shared the Fried Chicken & Waffle platter were definitely glad they ordered it together. The thing was ginormous! Half of a fried chicken and a Belgian waffle that was topped with powdered sugar and strawberry butter.
Last but not least my final coworker said his burger was delicious as well. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of that, not sure why. However his plate looked just as full as my Metro Club.
No one left hungry. I promise you that.
Pros: Good Food and lots of it. Fair prices. Excellent specials, which I forgot to mention. Always check the specials Metro Diner. I love their breakfast specials.
Cons: A little cramped, a little on the loud side when full.
I'll definitely be back...
Read moreThis Metro Diner is located along Volvo Parkway just past the intersection with Eden Way when coming from Virginia Beach. You'll want to enter at the second entrance as the first entrance only gets you to the Einstein Brothers side of the shopping area. There is ample parking available. I had passed through before the place opened and was looking forward to it.
I have been to Metro Diner before they opened locally. I had been to one in Saint Augustine, FL in 2016 on the way back home from a cruise. That one was such a great experience, to the point that after I got home, I wrote them saying they should come up to the Hampton Roads area. Fast forward a few years and they are finally here.
I have been here now a few times. My first visit was for dinner on November 10, 2018 and a subsequent visit on November 18, 2018 for breakfast. For both visits, it was busy, but we were immediately seated. Service was excellent on both visits, with the servers coming to the table very quickly after being seated as well as during the meal to check to make sure everything was to our liking.
With the first visit being dinner, I went with the Hot Turkey Plate. This entree comes with mashed potatoes with gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, a baguette, and vegetables. I substituted the vegetables for a different side as they weren't the kind I liked. The food came out hot and quick. The portion sizes are also larger than what I have gotten for similar items at other restaurants in the area. Just like the prior visit in FL, the food was exceptionally good and done just right.
The next visit would be about a week later, but for breakfast this time. For this visit, I went with the Croissant French Toast breakfast entree. Bacon and eggs are not included, so I did order them separately to go with the entree. Once again, the food came out about ten minutes later and came out fresh and hot. The Croissant French Toast was larger than I thought it would be, but was exceptionally good. The eggs and bacon came out fresh and hot as well. This was another overall excellent meal here.
Overall, this is a great place to come for any meal. The food and service are exceptional. There is some outdoor seating available as well when the weather is better too. I even asked if they would be bringing one to Virginia Beach as well, and they did say they do plan to do so. This is absolutely one of my favorite places to come now that they are in the area. If you are looking for something new, visiting the area, or the like and your travels take you this way, be sure to check...
Read moreI admit it, I’m a breakfast person. The crazy kind that gets up early and wants to indulge in all the sites and smells that get you going in the morning. Couldn’t have found a better place to do that than here at Metro diner. Tucked in at the end of a small shopping strip, it’s inviting from the moment you step up to the front door. Friendly greeting, critical for an early morning start, and prompt seating. I arrived a little later on a Friday morning, place was moderately full, and I knew I was in the right place as it was definitely a locals hang out with regulars.
My server Tiffany was a real ray of sunshine on a gray day. I always like to ask my server for their suggestions, mainly because I’m interested, but also to see whether they actually know the menu. Tiffany knew this one inside and out,
I ended up taking her suggestion and ordering the fried chicken Benedict. I am a big Egg Benedict fan, but had never tried it with fried chicken tenders. Had it with a side of hashbrowns. What a great combination, fried chicken tenders on a fluffy biscuit, with poached egg and hollandaise sauce. The chicken was perfectly fried, crispy and tender with a lot of flavor. The biscuit was firm without being hard and dry, and the hollandaise sauce was perfect. Hashbrowns were crispy, and definitely not greasy, a real issue for me. Added the onions and peppers to the hashbrowns for a little extra zing.
For as busy as the place was, it was remarkably clean and well kept. Tables were bussed quickly with every member of the staff pitching in. This is particularly important to me, as nothing can start your day off wrong than a sticky table.
Also, I’m a sucker for chalkboard specials. Sounds stupid to some, but it’s an extra little touch that shows a little artistic flair, and keeps the place looking fresh.
The only nit I have is the orange juice. It was from concentrate, which is not my favorite. I obviously prefer fresh squeezed, but that’s near impossible to get anywhere these days. Wasn’t bad, just not my favorite. I would also opt to have the coffee a little stronger. Again, not bad, just that I’m a bit of a coffee addict, the...
