Red Fez Bar & Grill — Restaurant in Chicopee

Red Fez is terrific Traditional Portuguese cuisine. Try the (spelling accuracy not guaranteed) Befana (grilled Pork sandwich), Prago (grilled Steak sandwich), Shrimp A Casa (few other local Port. restaurants get this Red Hot based appetizer correct. One local competitor served me one that seemed like it's primary ingredient for the sauce was milk the one time I tried it. What a disappointment, tho I am spoiled by Red Fez's recipe, (Ana Honorio started when she first came over from Port. in the late 1970's or early 1980's, @ the then Casa Los Pescadores??) or Shrimp Dinner with Rice, Bitoque (open Steak Sandwich, with a friend egg, hopefully Pickled Vegetables, Port. Rice and Fries (all terrific). Their stews, Pork based or seafood (Aletjana) are to die for as well. Can't really go wrong with anything, right down to the excellent espresso. After frequenting this restaurant for decades, I learned that on the weekends (Maybe Sat??) they make a boiled Port. Dinner (I think it includes Tripe and Blood sausage, but am unsure, that Port. locals come for specifically. I have never tried it. The bottom line, if you try their food, the biggest problem you will have is deciding which of the dishes to have as they are all terrific! Eat in or take out, your food will be ready in minutes. Lastly, though European in culture like tipping is probably not well practiced by the European clientele, whereas I tip 20% (nearly always) on take out, as long as they say "Thank You". If you get Tanya, or her Mother (very little English) the chef, you are sure to get polite prompt service, exactly the way you order it. Not a huge fan. Came here by recommendation from a friend. Parking is very limited with some street parking available. The restaurant feels small inside as the middle has a very large table for larger groups so the rest of the tables are squashed together.

The service was slow and sloppy. Our waitress was super nice to start but you could tell she was overwhelmed and overworked as the night got busier. I only saw 3 waitresses on staff, which seemed inadequate since the place was packed. She started off with great service but every time she came back she'd say, sorry it's just busy right now. After we ordered it took us 45 minutes to get our food. One of the items was a shrimp cake and that didn't come until well after our entrees. The shrimp cake is a joke. It only had one single tiny shrimp inside and it wasn't even cleaned. The entree's were pretty good but nothing amazing. We asked for the check and it took another 20 minutes just to get that then another 10 minutes to get it back with our card.

Outside of those things the place is LOUD. It's very, very difficult to have a conversation when it's at full capacity. This is one of those, 'go out to dinner to just be on your phone the entire time' places. Would...

The 1st i went to eat we dined in. @ 1st i thought great this is a lil hole in the wall bar. Wasnt expecting much. The person i went w said food was good! Ok, had a few drinks was hungry. We had lobster & sides. I was actually very impressed! Food was great! Came again had shrimp & rice, great again! Every meal ive ever had was always very good. When u 1st pull up & walk in, im sure most dont think their going to get much from the meal. No its not a big fancy restaurant & can get quite crowded(obviously for a reason)Not a big huge pking lot, but if u come a lil earlier u should b ok. & no theres not 15waitstaff, asking how your doing every 5min. & theres not an enormously big kitchen, the chef is back there cooking away, ea order so it might take a bit longer. But if your interested in the taste,quality, & quantity of your food & left the place feeling satisfied & enjoyed your food, then thats really all that matters! U can go to a fancy restaurant & pay double the amount & might not taste the same or u will get 1/2 the amount! Id rather pay less, get more & walk out feeling full & satisfied!!
