I've been running into a number of "unexpected gems" lately, and Italianissimo Tratoria is absolutely one of the best.
From the outside, an entirely average looking Americanized-Italian restaurant. The interior is a little more promising. But I knew we might possibly be in for a treat when the bread served before the meal was genuine Tuscan-style table bread, rarely served in the US because Americans tend not to like its unsalted flavor. Don't balk - it's the setup for your taste-buds for the outstanding meal to come.
Service was friendly and very competent - not too pushy and not too distant. The overall vibe of the place is fairly casual - this is not "gourmet", but rather exactly the style of food and atmosphere you'd find in a semi-casual restaurant in Florence, Sienna, or the Cinque Terre.
Our meal arrived and I was delighted. I've spent two long trips over large portions of Italy, and this kitchen KNOWS genuine Italian food, not the bastardized, altered, Americanized "Italian" food so often provided in the USA. The food at Italianissimo Tratoria is the "real deal," and I haven't had such authentic Italian food outside of Italy, regardless of price - and I really mean that: I've had any number of Italian meals at far more expensive restaurants that weren't nearly as authentic or competent as this. It was a joy to see and taste the output of a kitchen that knows the real thing. The only way they could have been more authentic would be to provide primi and secundi courses, but that just won't fly with American eating habits. It was NOT a problem for our visit. I mention it only to illustrate how genuine this place is.
Prices were very reasonable and especially so for the value of the meal and experience.
My ONLY complaint about this restaurant is that it isn't in MY neighborhood. I'd be a regular for sure! Definitely going back the next time I'm in the area.
To the owner: Bravissimo for your efforts! I had a thoroughly wonderful meal...
Read moreAs a first-time visitor to the 3rd Avenue area in Chula Vista, Italianisimo Trattoria absolutely exceeded all expectations. This charming, independent restaurant is a true hidden gem that left me speechless – in the best possible way!
From the moment I stepped inside for lunch, I was struck by the inviting and "good looking" ambiance. The atmosphere is genuinely nice, creating a comfortable and authentic Italian trattoria feel. It's clear this isn't a chain; it boasts a unique character that adds to its appeal.
The service was nothing short of great – attentive, friendly, and efficient, making for a truly pleasant dining experience. And then there's the food! I opted for the Fettuccine Veneziana from their lunch menu, and it was, in a word, fantastic. The flavors were rich and authentic, a testament to their culinary skill. Beyond the lunch offerings, I noted their regular menu features a great selection of classic Italian dishes and an awesome wine list, promising an equally delightful experience for dinner.
Perhaps one of the most surprising and welcome aspects was the pricing. Compared to many restaurants in California, Italianisimo Trattoria offers great value without compromising on quality.
The area itself around 3rd Avenue in Chula Vista is also noteworthy. I had heard it wasn't always the best, but if that's true, the city has done an incredible job with upgrades and cleanup. It's now a vibrant and appealing neighborhood, making Italianisimo Trattoria an even more attractive destination.
If you find yourself near 3rd Avenue in Chula Vista, Italianisimo Trattoria is an absolute must-try. It's a delightful spot that combines wonderful food, excellent service, a lovely atmosphere, and fantastic value. I can't...
Read moreMy partner and I went here on a Saturday night (4/13) and it wasn't busy at all, we were immediately seated. We were given menus/water quickly, but then our server(s?) disappeared for a bit. Once the food was ordered, it came out quickly and was absolutely delicious. I had mushroom ravioli, and it was perfectly cooked. My partner had salmon and asked for a side of buttered noodles, which were a little bland (yes, even for buttered noodles) and weren't done all the way. I like my pasta al dente, and it was still probably 30 seconds underdone even for that. No big deal though, still edible. The place seemed quite clean as well.
The only cons I would give this place would be the staff. As I mentioned, it was quite slow while we were there, however it the other tables seemed to have constant service while we couldn't figure out who our server even was. We had seen a different person for seating, food, waters, and the check. It took quite a long time to get someone to pay attention to us and bring the check, and every member of their staff walked past us multiple times. Additionally, the staff was so insanely loud in the "back" (the kitchen is right next to the seating area, separated by a partition) I genuinely thought there was a Bachelorette party or something happening until I realized there were no additional rooms - just employees screaming and laughing in the kitchen. I couldn't hear my partner talk across a 2 foot table. Luckily, they quieted down fairly quickly, but it was still quite annoying.
The employees were nice enough even if they were inattentive and shriekingly loud, but I would still return to this place for the food. Give it a try if...
