Ok, so I "randomly" chose @thepickledpig because of the deli menu and the dining room was clean and appealing. I did not look at the reviews nor did i look at the menu. So upon arriving I paused just a second , doubting if I should go in but the smell of smoked meat drew me in. I walk in and let me tell you, there was a young lady and two of the nicest men you could ever meet. The owner (I presume was behind the counter and asked is this a BBQ restaurant and ge said no, I added I smell BBQ. He said I smoke the meat and your smelling smoke turkey! My heart skipped a beat. The two gentlemen encouraged to try the smoke turkey and how one of them was having it now on a potatoe bun. I wanted to get this right, so i took a minute to look over the menu and was encouraged to look at their sides. I have to be honest , my day had been blah (but i was still grateful) so I can not tell you what's on the menu lol. I ended up deciding on the Turkey Rueben that had smoked turkey, tomme, pickled sauerkraut and russian dressing on white rye! I was also blessed with a fig oil infused cookie by one of the awesome gentlemen.
BABYYYY when i tell you that sandwich did not make across the bridge - it was devoured! The turkey was so fresh, tender and SMOKED! That smoked flavor was delicious and through out every crevice in that turkey meat! I didn't have the sound mind to ask what wood was used but it almost taste like mesquite maybe even hickory. Needless to say I will be back to sit at the counter and enjoy more of the menu, but it's going to take a minute though because I'm in love with that...
Read moreOne of the best restaurants in the city. When a hard working food nerd blends the skills of a top tier chef and then has the audacity to do even MORE by caring about where the ingredients actually come from...you get the Pickled Pig. It's perfection. From the unique and clever menu that hosts robust and original dishes. To the flavor profiles of his product. To going the extra mile of locally sourcing everything...this place is truly special. It's more than special...its brilliant. If that wasn't enough, the man has bristo nights where he hand crafts the entire menu for the evening. But wait...there's more! Yes that's right. There's more. The owner also hosts cooking and pickling classes on top of everything else. This man has a sickness and the only prescription is the end result of all his dedication - as this is the type of chef that actually cares what he serves you while simultaneously sacrificing what I could only assume to be the majority of his free time to do so. The Pickled Pig deserves some serious awards for its ability to do so much at such a high level of care with none of...
Read moreThe Pickled Pig in Walnut Hills is one of my favorite recent finds. The small deli specializes in smoked meats and fermented/pickled sides. Orders are placed at the counter and the menu focuses on sandwiches and deli-style salads.
For lunch, I decided to try the smoked turkey sandwich ($12) topped with sauerkraut, tomme (a French/Swiss cheese), and Russian dressing on sourdough rye, a sort of turkey Reuben. I really enjoyed this sandwich with its piled high delightfully smoky turkey. The bread was also outstanding!
On the side, I had their Korean carrots (a $3 add-on to the sandwich), a sweet and sour pickled delight. They also have potato salad, beet & apple salad, chicken salad, egg salad, hummus, and more.
If the Pickled Pig were closer to my house it would definitely be in my weekly rotation for lunch. But even so, I will have to remember to stop in again for more...
