I really wanted to like this place. I like to give my business to small local businesses and decided to give this place a try. I will start by saying, the staff is amazing!! Very welcoming and friendly.
We all got a 1 meat platter. Hubby got the pulled pork, my MIL got the chicken and I took the dive and paid the $3.50 upcharge to get the beef brisket. Our sides included okra, tots, beans cornbread and potato salad. After about 20 minutes, our food comes out. Imagine my shock when I see that the beef brisket is sliced thin like deli meat and placed on 4 half slices of bread!! Talk about catfish!! My hubby had what I could only say was a child's sized portion of pulled pork. My MIL had the chicken which was super dry and no amount of sauce was going to fix that. Now the brisket did have decent flavor but the manner in which it was cut just killed it for me. The potato salad...don't waste your money. It was bland and potatoes were hard. The okra were tasty but I did have to spit out a few fibrous pieces. The cornbread was kinda sweet but yummy. The beans weren't bad just had no real flavor.
The owner did come out to check on us and my husband told him he wasn't a fan due to the portion size. The owner stated that each portion of meat is 1/4lb but that is not mentioned on the menu at all nor do I think that my husbands portion was 1/4lb. We did point out the potato salad and he swapped it for the Mac, which was ok. The owner apologized and said that the food wasn't for everyone. While I understand where he was coming from, I sincerely think that is the wrong attitude to have. You should want your food to be so good that the masses come!! PLUS, YOUR PORTION SIZES MUST BE ON POINT IF YOU ARE GOING TO SET UP CAMP RIGHT ACROSS FROM SMOKEY BONES BBQ!!
Overall, this place can make it if they make some adjustments. I don't know if I would call this "Southern BBQ " or where their meats are smoked. It needs a touch more soul for it to truly be southern in my opinion. Best wishes to this place, but it's a one and...
Read moreI do a lot of restaurant reviews. But let's get serious for a minute. There's is no review more important than a first time review of a BBQ restaurant. As a native son of Texas there are few things I take as seriously as BBQ review. Let's start at the beginning. Restaurant is brand new. Very nicely set up with tables and bench seating. Staff was very friendly and responsive and helped walk me thru the menu. Pretty easy ordered the platter with 2 meats 2 sides. $20 is pretty reasonable as well. Meal served, properly, on paper on a metal tray. Got the brisket and pulled pork. Pulled pork was very good and the brisket was very tender and good flavor and looked really nice. Good portions as well. Wish there was a bit more sauce but I sure could have asked. Very solid. Many places have the sides as secondary and get taste like they are. Very different here. Got the slaw and tater tots (love tots) The slaw was SUPERB. Just a touch of sweet and great taste profile. Not at all dry but not soggy either. Great portion. Terrific. The tater tots were special! I just love tots and these were literally some of the best I've ever eaten. Very light, airy and crunchy. Very unique! Perfectly cooked and nice portion. I would go back just for the tots!! They were that good! I will absolutely go back and try the other meats: chicken , jalapeño sausage and smoked ham. And while it might kill me a little on the inside to skip the tots I've got to try the other sides to see if they live up the slaw and fries. Highly...
Read moreHoly cow this place is great! I'm pretty picky when it comes to BBQ and this place blew me away. Not only was the meat out of this world, but the sides were fantastic! And, if you know BBQ, then you know the sides are usually mediocre. Not here!
Here's the details: We ordered: pulled pork, brisket, the Hot Texan sandwich, coleslaw, mac and cheese and beans. Meat: Perfectly moist and smoky. The sauce is definitely on the sweet side so order it on the side if you aren't a sweet sauce person. But, I loved it. Coleslaw: Fantastic. And when I said, "This is fantastic." My wife said, "You NEVER say the coleslaw is fantastic." Mac and Cheese: Best I've ever had anywhere. Seriously. It's made to order with this crazy creamy cheese sauce and then top with more cheese that's then melted. My kid and my wife couldn't get enough. Beans: Not something I usually order, but my wife loved them. They had a unique (in a good way), rich flavor. Not overly sweet at all. Sandwich: Creative and spicy, as promised. More of an elevated BBQ experience. If you like BBQ but you have a S/O who doesn't, I bet they'd be able to find something they like here.
Bottomline: This will be our new go-to for BBQ around...
