First thing to note...they are cash only! Secondly, I'll definitely be going again.
A friend of mine that lives over an hour away from Kingston drives to get 2 dozen bagels here every couple months. She wraps and freezes them which is what I intended to do. For her to drive over an hour to get bagels, I figured it was a place I had to check out. First time I've ever seen a pumpernickel raisin product. So those were first ones I had added to the bag. Gotta say, I'm sadly disappointed in the flavor. I love pumpernickel but these barely have any pumpernickel flavor and not many raisins. However...the size of these bagels is crazy awesome. They are also so fresh tasting, chewy, and then super soft on the inside. I can see why they are so popular and well liked. I have since tried a plain bagel and a cinnamon raisin. Cinnamon raisin lacking in cinnamon flavor and raisins. I know their sandwiches are very popular and plan on trying one next time I go. I still have other flavors to try like the Garlic, Everything, Salt, and regular pumpernickel. I really wanted to try their blueberry but they were out of them. While some flavors might be lacking in taste, I still have to give 4 stars just based on the size, texture, chewy/softness, freshness and price. Under $12 for a dozen fresh, homemade bagels!!! That's fabulous. I went around 12:30 on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't incredibly busy. Busy but not overwhelming. If I were ordering a sandwich or going during the morning, I suspect the wait would have been longer. But just grabbing a couple dozen bagels was quick and easy. One last thing...if you are vegan they unfortunately do not have any bagels that are vegan friendly. I messaged...
Read moreI stopped into Sunrise Bagel while in town visiting. They were busy, which is usually a good sign. I ordered three bagels and waited as they were prepared. The sign says something like $1.20 per bagel. (you can read it on the board in one of my pictures) Obviously that meant without butter or cream cheese and such. As I waited I looked around. There is a nice area with tables for folks to sit and eat. I find that a nice option for folks. After a fairly long wait because of the large volume of customers, I received my three bagels. I also picked up the local paper, which I think was $1. I can't find the receipt, but If I recall correctly, it was close to $15. Probably a little less, but close. But I was definitely closer to $15 than $10. So I felt that the price was a little on the high side. Now to be fair, two bagels had cream cheese, and one had butter. But that's still probably $12 or more for three bagels. Or over $8 for butter and cream cheese. Maybe I am wrong and just picky, but it just seemed to be too much. Now price aside, the bagels were not bad. I would even say they were good. No they were not the best bagels that I personally have ever had. But it was good. So I would probably stop in again if in town. What I found expensive might just be the normal in New York. And I figure the other customers can't...
Read moreI moved to Philadelphia from the Hudson Valley 12 years ago. Because the bagels here are so terrible, often, I will wake up in a cold sweat just screaming “SUNRISE BAGELS!” My wife kept asking me, why I do yell about a bagel shop from my childhood in my sleep. I told her I couldn’t explain. I would just have to show her. So we packed up the kids and the dog and drove all the way home...a pilgrimage of sorts.
As we crested the ridge of Ulster Avenue, the sun literally rose above Sunrise; a testament and a tribute all in one. We placed our orders and sat down as a family. As excited as I was, I balked on taking the first bite...I wanted to see the reaction in my family’s eye as they bit into their very first bite, something I wish I could experience for the first time.
What happened next was a defining moment in my life. As my wife looked at me dead in my eyes and said “...it’s good,” a pregnant pause overcame the table. I feigned an excuse of leaving my phone in the car and as I pulled out of the parking lot and got back on 87, my dog and I never looked back.
If you see my wife or kids, tell them this story. If you ain’t Sunrisin’ you’re...
