I walked up the hill of Park Street and found a bar, the outdoor cafe awaiting customers and I was the only customers. I heard the blast of the first colorful mortar. So I sat at a cafe table and watched the chrysanthemums and snapdragons arise into a sky that still had yet to grow fully dark. I guess children have to go to bed by Ten, so most shows send up the fireworks too early. Fifteen minutes, and a barrage of sparks and whistles and lights pushed back the night somewhat, but only a slight push of light. A fellow came by and tried the door. “Hey, what is this place doing closed. It’s Family Day and all the bars in town are closed”.
“I bet all the bartenders wanted to take their children to the fireworks”.
“Yeah, I can see what you are saying”.
A friend same him, Edgar, and that friend carried a backpack. And inside that backpack lined with a space age fabric, awaited a twelve pack of Coors Light. When the police drove by in its bull of a truck, I’m pretty sure the officers just assumed the bar was open and doing business. The bar had left the lights on and even left on a bank of television monitors, broadcasting ESPN. “The police are cool in Mechanicsville. They keep an eye on what needs minding”. More of Edgar’s friends stopped and hung out. A collection went around and Edgar strolled over to the nearby Stewart’s Dairy to stock up on more Silver Bullet tall boys.
The guys had last year gone up the Anthony, cutting into pieces any logs blocking the progress of tubers or kayakers. It hit me. In early America, we didn’t have too many engineers educated by colleges. We did have clever men and women who learned how to handle any problem in engineering. The Mechanics Institute in downtown San Francisco honors this class of Americans, gradually replaced by practitioners with degrees. Mechanicsville had taken its name from the millwrights and people good with their hands. I asked all around. All of us gathered had a mechanic in our family. I declined another beer, and made my way home, thinking of Grandfather Edward Jacob, mechanic.
It’s time for the great grandsons and granddaughters of Mechanicsville to fix the city, five thousand people living in a town that once gave food and shelter to...
Read moreThis may be a great place to dine in, but we typically order for delivery or pick up. We have had some good experiences, but we've had more that weren't good. After the last time we ordered a few weeks ago, I don't think we will be back. We ordered two Cocozzos, tenders, and cheese fries. The tenders were fine. The fries I was kind of expecting to be slightly soggy as I was picking up, which is to be expected and I would have only blamed myself. However, this wasn't the case. They were almost dehydrated. You could pick up the whole brick of hard, dry, cheese fries from just one fry. They were terrible. The bread on both Cocozzos wasn't grilled or toasted, so it made them soggy. One of them was placed in the container upside down, and when it was flipped over, we realized it was likely done to try and hide the way the roll was cut. The top was sliced as t just a sliver, like maybe 1/8th of the thickness of the whole roll, if that. Now, we aren't expecting it to be cut perfectly in half, but you couldn't even put it on top of the sandwich because it was so thin, it was smaller than the end piece of a loaf of bread. At this point, with the rising cost of virtually everything, going out to eat is really a treat that we don't do very often. I know that we aren't the only family in that boat, and restaurants should be honored when patrons choose them during these times and put forth the effort to serve quality food. It has been a long time since I worked in service, but I would have never left the...
Read moreI don’t usually write reviews, but felt like I had to leave something for people to read. Couple months ago I was in line at a restaurant in Clifton park, the gentlemen in front of me told me he recognized me (prolly from my job) long story short he was a nice man and told me he owns the end zone to come try it out sometime. Fast forward months and months later I’m stuck out here in mechanicville for 2 weeks. The food in this town is extremely sub par, most things u want to eat u might as well drive to Clifton park for to tell u the truth. I decided to try out the end zone, I called for pick up for 10 Wings, Bar pretzels and turkey club sandwich. I pulled up to get my food and I ordered a drink, I’m a 1 min drive away and left 5 min after I ordered. When I got there my food was ready. The male and the female bar tender were both very nice. The wings were amazing. They absolutely stole the show. Good sauce ratio, crispy, and very meaty healthy size wings. I was extremely impressed by the wings, a lot of places are hit or miss. And for $14 they were 100% worth it. I was full off 5. The pretzels were very good and very fresh, the cheese was very good too. (I’m picky bout cheese sometimes). The turkey club was also good. Best food I’ve had in mechanicville so...
