I would have liked to give 3.5 stars but i don't think there's a half star option.
But onto the review. The ambiance and vibe of the place was nice. Staff was friendly and patient.
But how was the food? Well overall I'd say it was a little hit and miss. For example we started with the hushpuppies as a starter. The hushpuppies themselves were bland and tasteless, and very dry. The saving grace here was the maple butter dipping sauce. Without this sauce they would be almost inedible.
However we also tried a 1/4 rack of ribs and they were actually quite good. Not a lot of meat on the bone but tasty nonetheless. Not worth $13 for 3 ribs though.
Onto the main courses. I ordered the fried chicken with mac and cheese. Let just get this out of the way... The mac and cheese was delicious. Nice and gooey with breadcrumbs on top. Honestly one of the best macs I've ever had. The chicken was also pretty good but I'd fall short of calling it excellent. It could use a little more seasoning but i liked the fry on it and the meat itself was juicy and tender.
My dining partner got the shrimp poboy with chips. I did try their meal so I'll give some thoughts. The shrimp poboy was pretty good but lacking a litttle pizazz. The bread was nice and soft and the shrimp was cooked well. I just think it could have used a little more of the roumalaoude sauce and maybe something else could be added to the sandwhich to make it a little more exciting. Solid sandhwich though. As for the chips... Well to be honest they were bland and lacked seasoning. Slightly overcooked too. Really they were only enjoyable when dipped in the BBQ sauces that accompanied the chicken.
So in summary i think Southern Fare is a solid place to enjoy a meal. I don't think it quite lived up to the lofty reviews online but it was enjoyable regardless. I'd give it a 3.5 with potential to improve with some...
Read moreWhat an amazing place. I was there for Sunday Brunch and I was shocked that there wasn't a line. They had a special on Mugs. So I got a bloody and it was a cheap add for a skewer. See the photo. You can also see the whole place is indy-chiqe, clean, bright and beautiful setting. I sat at the bar and received excellent service. Good conversation, great recommendations, and made accommodations.
So I was recommended the Nashville hot chicken sandwich. The meal came with chips, I decided to upgrade to the crispy mash potatoes. Those were delicious and like a salt potato smash, served in a skillet with better. The sandwich deserves like 7 stars.
When in Nashville I order a Nashville hot chicken at almost every place. They have a nice spicy flavor that's also salty and sweet. Some are hotter than others, some are too soggy, some are just breading, and some the chicken is too dry. They're almost always covered in pickles and served on a plain white bun. The sandwich here was perfectly cooked, inside and out. The breading wasn't thin like these sandwiches have a lot of times. When it comes to a Nashville hot chicken the glaze will so often moisten it and makes the breast a little soggy. Some places combat this with a breading thick enough to make it crispy throughout, but they end up being overly breaded like a lot of chicken strips often are.
The thickness of the breadding on this bird was better than I have had anywhere else that was what made this sandwich. It was perfectly crispy with a nice thin glaze, not too hot, but still some heat, and a juicy breast. The layer of pickles were perfectly covering it all. And the soft white bun added to the sweetness of the sandwich.
Loved this sandwich and will be back here a lot definitely...
Read moreWe Happened to be in Oswego to pick up some greenhouses and decided to grab something to eat before heading home, so glad we picked this place. When we entered we were told to sit anywhere so decided to sit at the bar. We were immediately greeted by Justin with some water and menus. After a minute looking at the menu we made our first drink choices the Old Money and Blood in the water. Both drinks were well balanced and Justin did a great job relating himself to the drinks while presenting them, this made for a more personalized experience and a great start to our meal. For appetizers we started with the Smoked Cheese fries, they were so tasty. It was not heavy like I expected, and the little pops of tomato added the perfect amount of acidity. For dinner we shared the fried chicken with the jalapeno glaze and the crab cakes. The fried chicken was extra crispy, tender, and well balanced. The glaze gave a spicy, sweet deliciousness to the dish. The crab cake was delicious but probably my least favorite thing just missing that wow factor like the other dishes. We also could have used some paper napkins or wet napkins to go with the chicken. To end the night we had the pink panther and the city of gold drinks. Both drinks were absolutely amazing. Both drinks were spicy but complemented by additional flavors that made for a perfect ending to put dinner. If we are in the area again and Justin is working we will definitely be back. Great job done by not only our server/bartender but the chefs as...
