UPDATE: They have responded saying I've worked here before. This is not true.
REVIEW:I recently visited Thorn and Roots Burlington Cafe with high hopes of enjoying a delightful açaí bowl and refreshing smoothie. However, my experience left much to be desired, and I found myself deeply disappointed by the overall quality and value offered by this establishment.
First and foremost, the prices at Thorn and Roots were exorbitant, especially considering the portions and quality of the food. The avocado toast, which was touted as a specialty, came with a shockingly high price tag that was completely disproportionate to the underwhelming taste and presentation. It felt as though the cafe was capitalizing on the trendy nature of avocado toast without putting in the effort to deliver a satisfying culinary experience.
Moving on to the açaí bowls and smoothies, I found them to be severely lacking in flavor and freshness. The açaí base lacked the vibrant taste that I have come to expect from quality bowls, and the toppings provided were sparse and unimpressive. The smoothies were similarly lackluster, lacking the freshness and creativity that one would hope for in a cafe that claims to specialize in such beverages.
Furthermore, the service at Thorn and Roots left much to be desired. The staff seemed disinterested and apathetic, showing little enthusiasm or willingness to assist customers. It was evident that the focus was more on rushing through orders rather than ensuring a pleasant and welcoming environment for patrons. This lack of genuine customer service significantly detracted from the overall experience.
Additionally, the cafe's seating arrangements were uncomfortable and cramped. It was challenging to find a suitable place to sit and enjoy my food, with limited space available for customers. The ambiance was unremarkable, lacking any unique or inviting elements that would make me want to linger and enjoy my meal.
Considering the high prices, lackluster food quality, indifferent service, and unappealing ambiance, I cannot recommend Thorn and Roots Burlington Cafe to anyone seeking a satisfying and enjoyable dining experience. There are plenty of other establishments in the area that offer superior food, better value for money, and a more pleasant atmosphere. Save your time and money by exploring other options that will provide a more fulfilling...
Read moreWe had a TERRIBLE experience here. The owner takes zero responsibility for the myriad mistakes and slow service. I had a melted smoothie and cold avocado toast that was fifteen minutes late. The bill for those two items and a smoothie bowl was nearly $40. My wife was waiting in the store will pay the order time while others were ordering AND walking out with food before her.
I called the store and stated that I would be leaving a one star review if I was not refunded for the order. The store owner told me that a refund had already been issued. I thanked him and told him that it had been resolved. Unfortunately, his husband, the other Co-owner, decided to call my phone at 900 pm to give me excuses about covid, about hiring problems, and talk about anything BUT apologizing for the slow service.
Then, he told me that the only reason that I had been refunded is because I threatened a review. Someone must be lying here. One told me a refund had ALREADY been issued while the other tells me it was only because I threatened a review.
The bottom line: the owner makes excuses for shoddy work and product. He complained to me that he "doesn't even know why he's doing this".
The situation was over when the refund was issued. You DO NOT call customers and interrogate and harass them. The appropriate action is to apologize, profusely if necessary, and offer the customer a gift card to demonstrate that the situation was a one off mistake and invite them back.
I've given two stars because at least one of the owners knew enough to issue a refund after the incident.
This restaurant will likely be out of business very soon. Owners calling and venting to their customers is definitely not a good...
Read moreI’m absolutely appalled by how poorly I was treated at this place. I came in excited to try the limited-edition smoothie and made sure to request no pecans because I have a life-threatening allergy to tree nuts. They assured me it would be prepared in a separate blender, which is standard and expected for anyone with a severe allergy.
Things went downhill fast. First, the “manager” had to refund and reprocess my payment because their rewards system wasn’t working, which flagged my card. After multiple attempts, I ended up using a different card just to complete the transaction. This alone was frustrating, but I decided to let it go. However, I wasn’t a fan of the smoothie (not every flavor is for everyone, and that’s okay), so I ordered a different one. When I received it, the staff informed me it contained peanut butter, which I confirmed was fine since peanuts aren’t the same as tree nuts.
From there, the experience went from bad to worse. I was told I was “causing problems” and given attitude about my allergy concerns and the payment issue – both things completely out of my control. Apparently, having a life-threatening allergy is “too much of a hassle” for this establishment, and somehow, I was made to feel like I was in the wrong simply for needing safe food. It’s disheartening, to say the least, to be dismissed and treated with such disregard over basic accommodations that should be taken seriously, especially when it comes to allergens.
If you have any food allergies or want basic courtesy, this is definitely not the place to go. Unbelievably disappointed and left...
