On the 18th of August 2010 I was traveling through Clanton Alabama. I was told about a Mexican restaurant in the area, (San Marcos Mexican Restaurant). I was told it was on of the best in this small little town of Canton AL. I had been gravely misinformed. Upon our Arrival at the restaurant we were ignored by the hostess for the first couple of minuets of our encounter. When we were finally acknowledged we were treated is if we were not even good enough to be in there restaurant much less eat there. Due to being on the road that day already for approximately 12 hours we chose to stay after all we had been told the food was excellent. Upon arrival at our booth we discovered that the restaurant was also lacking in the area of cleanliness. We should have left at this point but due to our travels on the road we were exhausted and chose to stay and order, when the food arrived we knew for sure that we had followed the advise of someone who obviously never tasted Mexican food or did not have a taste bud left in there head. Most Taco Bell’s could be classified as a four star restaurant compared to this establishment. And it doesn’t end there, that day happened to be my birthday, my son saw the wait staff singing Happy Birth Day to other patrons of the restaurant he thought it would be neat if they sang to his father that alone would have been OK but after their performance one of the wait staff proceeded to smear whip cream and strawberry sauce on my face this may be OK for a child but, I am a grown man, after the waiter did this once and saw that I was less than amused you would think it will stop at this point, it did not continued on for a total 3 smears one on my nose and one on each cheek. I immediately took my complaint up to the front counter, where this complaint was not taken seriously. I would not recommend this restaurant to any one. If I saw a stray dog eating out of the dumpster I would have to take it to Taco Bell for a real meal.

Unhappy Guest of a Disgusting Little Restaurant...

Went to San Marcos today ordered queso cheese and completely ate all of it before waitress came back for drinks. She's just having a bad day right? Next she brings 2 drinks one for my wife, one for my daughter. 5 minutes later she brings the other two for me and my son. At this point she took our orders, we thought at least. She goes to the back and we don't see her for a little over 25 minutes except when she ducks in and out of the back to a couples table in the corner. Man she was at that table 3 times the 3rd time my wife flagged the waitress down and the waitress ignored my wife completely and darted to the back. In the meantime we were out of drinks and chips flagging down other waitresses to get things. 10 minutes after that the original waitress brings our orders out except for my sons order which she then said we didn't order. He ordered 1st. It was a ridiculous statement. Then my wife told her we'd like some more salsa and said we didn't want her to forget. She went on to try to say she had came to the table several times. Then I told her we hadn't seen her for 25 minutes and another waitress actually helped us. The crappy waitress then laughed and walked off. At that point we asked management for boxes to take our things to go to try and not make a scene. That's when the manager actually told me she had get this 12 tables should have told him she was too busy. There were only 14-16 tables actually in the restaurant at the time with three other waitresses plus if he knew there was an issue why didn't he step in. All in all I've been to this restaurant many times living in Clanton. I won't go back again though. The management are just slightly better servers not real management. The servers are an absolute embarrassment. Avoid eating here...

The food was awful. The white cheese dip was like water. Seriously, water! I got the chicken chimichanga made with shredded chicken. It was so dry I could only choke down 4 bites. The refried beans were burnt. The guacamole was from a can...no way they made it because it tasted like metal. The tacos (soft) were completely open and the wraps were brunt. No kidding, burnt. The salsa, also from a jar and also like water had no flavor. The rice was instant rice. I've made it at home enough to know that it was not fresh. It was dry too. Just all around a bad meal with bad service. I drank my tea and waited for everyone else to finish their meals (not one of the 3 of us actually ate it, it was awful) and never got a refill. We went to McDonald's after we left because we were hungry. The food is awful, the service is awful and the table was sticky like it hadn't been cleaned in a year. And to top it off it was $65.00 then another 25 at McDonald's. Don't know how this place stays in business. And never mind the pounding on the roof, it's being repaired. Too many other choices at that exit off 65 to choose that place. Disappointed by...

I've been going to San Marcos since I was a kid, and this plate has been one of my regulars; the "Letter E." It is a taco, rice & beans, a chili rellenó, and an enchilada. The price has escalated from what it used to be to somewhere around $9, but it is still one of the better values if you're really hungry. My recommended order of operations here is to eat the taco over the rice & beans so that whatever meat and cheese spills out, does so into the rice & beans. Then I combine the rice & beans, and eat about half of those with the rellenó. And repeat with the enchilada; leaving just enough to mix the leftover enchilada sauce to mix up and dip out with a couple of the chips. Fun fact about this visit: My family and I had just pulled in when we noticed a storm brewing North of us. We went in, and were seated as normal and placed our order. A couple of minutes later, the storm hit; bringing a deluge, and lots of tiny pea-sized hail with it. The storm knocked the power out, but they still brought our food. It was a pretty unique experience.

The server gave us great service with delicious food. We love tacos, and they had some new menu items to experience here. The fish tacos with pineapple got some unique responses, but they were enjoyed. The fish was fresh, and the corn and flour tortillas were perfectly cooked. The burrito was as big as we've ever ordered, an excellent value for the price. Shredded beef is not something we normally order, but the broth it simmered in earned good reviews from the 3 foodies. The street corn was a bit strange with a lot of sauce and cheese, but the unique presentation in a Styrofoam cup still tasted alright. Horchata got a 3/5, not tasting bad, just watery. The quesadilla had great flavor and cooked really well. Guacamole was simple, avocados and a little additional seasoning. Good for dipping. The queso had a good flavor, too. We'd return here. Good value for the food and cost to feed our large family.

Food was just ok... my taco salad was a bit bland to be honest. I was dismayed to see that there was an upcharge for sour cream and tomatoes on a taco salad... that's kinda what makes it a taco salad, right? Without those additions its only lettuce, cheese, and beef. There was plenty of beef on the salad, but little (if any) seasoning. I added salt & peppet and the salsa (from the chips on the table) to it. There was no seasoning in it either, no heat at all. My companion enjoyed her chile renneno, the taco, and the enchilada but agreed that someone needs to add some flavor and seasoning to the recipes. The decor is outdated and looks dingy and a bit shabby. Could use a good clean and some fresh paint. The ladies room was less than clean as well.
