We stopped into the mailroom for our 1 year wedding anniversary. We had a reservation for 5pm but it was empty at that time so it was probably not necessary, but when we left at 5:45 it was starting to fill up. We were given a table and waters right away. The water tasted a bit musty but it was cold.
We ordered the Samosas off the specials menu. If you are familiar with samosas don’t go in expecting anything like a samosa you have had before. They were more hatch green chili like and the flavor was akin to chicken taquitos. The chili pineapple sauce however was delicious. They were very hot which was also nice. They didn’t exactly scratch the samosa itch but they were yummy and tasted fresh.
For our mains we ordered the surf and turf tacos and the chicken Mac and cheese. We know we took a risk with the Mac and cheese but it was calling to us, sadly it ended up being a scam call. The Mac and cheese was fine, we were a bit disappointed that it was clearly made with cold noodles covered in a processed cheese sauce. It has the same mouth coating ability as velveeta IYKYK. The bread crumbs were yummy but the seasoning they put on top just added to the salty nature of the cheese sauce making it a very salty dish overall. The noodles however were cooked correctly. The cheese bread they throw on top tastes like the kind of cheese wedge you would throw in the microwave after school as a kid while you waited for your mom to make dinner.
The tacos were better and we really enjoyed them. Especially the picked onions they had a nice lemony flavor to them. The tacos had a nice heat to them. What we would change is the searing and seasoning on the steak you could barely taste it and all the other flavors over powered any chance of a real surf and turf experience. Also the taco shells were pre made flour tortillas which is fine but they should have warmed them up or toasted them in some way. The fries were yummy, however, and I really enjoyed the seasoning on them.
We finished the meal off with the red velvet bread pudding, if you are coveting this dish I can confirm you should skip it. The texture was good and even though we waited for it to be “made” (which we don’t mind in the least) it came out very lukewarm. The actual red velvet had little to no flavor and was completely reliant on the toppings to carry the weight. There was nothing special about it and honestly we found it quite bland.
Overall we were not completely disappointed, there are just disappointing parts of our meal. We recognize that we could have ordered different items and possibly had a better experience, but everything on a menu should be the same quality. It was an expensive meal but it was part of the experience. We enjoyed the environment and the wait staff was very kind. But it is unlikely we will return to...
Read moreI've been here 3 times now. I've eaten here twice. The first time a year ago everything was amazing. Loved it all. Loved it so much I convinced my family to go. 2nd visit we were seated and waited over 30 minutes. One waitress showed up after 15 minutes and asked if we had been helped. We said no and she said she'd go see who our waitress was. 15 minutes later we all up and left. We were a party of 7 or 8. I decided to give it another try today because I guess I'm crazy and luckily we at least got our food! The host seated us and said he'd bring us 2 kids menus. He never came back. Strike 1. We ask our waiter for kids menus. She tells us that you all are out of kids menus and she can read it to us. Try reading a menu to a 3 year old and a 10 year old who are barely paying attention. How are you out of kids menus at 6 pm on a Sunday? Strike 2. We order, get our food and drinks and enjoy our food. I ordered the bone in pork chop with mashed potatoes. It came out absolutely drenched in sauce.the plate looked like a swamp. Every knife cut I was trying to not splash myself with how much liquid this cut of meat was sitting in. Regardless it tasted amazing. Wife's meal came out fine and she had no complaints. This was her birthday meal. My 3 year old had the grilled cheese with fruit. The fruit came with 2 blueberries and countless cantelope/pineapple. My 3 year old barely touched it. so much for various fruits. Waitress comes back and says "I think I can get you a free desert since it's your birthday. Let me check." Why on Earth would you say that if you aren't sure? Find out and come back to offer it or don't mention it at all.... I also ask for a refill of my coke. It doesn't come. We finish eating and wait. We wait for a good 10-15 minutes before finally the waitress comes back and asks if we decided on a desert. I thought you were going to check on the free desert?? At this point I'm overly annoyed so I ask for the check and a Coke to go. Wife orders the strawberry cheesecake to go. The cheese cake comes 5 minutes later on a plate. We say it was supposed to be to go. This new server takes it back and puts it in a box. We wait again now. Waitress comes back 10 minutes later and shows us the check on her tablet/phone device. She flashes the bill to us and we pay. Never once received a paper check. She then leaves. Still no coke to go. At this point I'm done. I decide to get a paper receipt. We wait 10 more minutes and finally flag down another waitress to get our waitress to come back. She does and FINALLY my coke to go appears. We ask for a paper receipt and a plastic fork(the to go cake didn't come with one apparently). We get both and leave determined to never come back. This was the worst service I've ever received in a restaurant EVER. And we eat...
Read moreThe Mailroom is a newly opened restaurant in the completely renovated Federal Building in downtown Clarksville Tennessee. The Mailroom is quite spacious inside while looking unlike anything else in Clarksville Tennessee.
If you had ever entered the Federal Building and now enter the Mailroom, you probably will be amazed at how large the space is. The Mailroom prominently features extremely high ceilings, numerous dining tables/booths and a large open glass wall kitchen. The entire atmosphere is airy and inviting. I especially love the kitchen.
As with any newly opened restaurant, I am never too critical with the service or the food as there are always kinks to work out and boy were there kinks. The entire service was excellent. The people were very friendly and prompt. Having said that, the server wanted to know your name. It seems like a small thing that some will love but I didn't care for it. Additionally, being a newly opened restaurant, having recommendations from the servers are welcomed. The server trying to hype up EVERY single menu selection was too much. Dialing it back just a little bit would have been appropriate and appreciated.
The food at The Mailroom was upscale and excellent unlike anywhere else in Clarksville. Although I had some issues with food temperature, the food was overall divine. The appetizers was some of the best I have eaten anywhere. Thankfully, there is a broad selection of appetizers so that most people can find something appealing if they are so inclined. The Entrée selections were excellent as well. The portions are adequate but not overwhelming as most people are accustomed to. The prices are not excessive but higher than most people are used to or comfortable paying.
The Mailroom is a beautiful restaurant serving excellent food with outstanding service. You would do well to visit on North 2nd Street in Downtown Clarksville Tennessee. Perfect for date or business meeting. Parking is difficult but not impossible. People in Clarksville are always complaining why something unique or great doesn't come to Clarksville.
