Cafe Spice Indian Cuisine — Restaurant in Cockeysville

What a horrible experience!

We had read good reviews about this place and were excited to try it. I live in Pennsylvania and my girlfriend lives in Baltimore so we frequently meet the Cockeysville area for dinner and enjoy a variety of ethnic foods.

We were promptly seated, given menus, water served ... a round of drinks and it was time to order. We ordered 2 appetizers to start and an order of naan.

A few minutes later, a man approached our table with the slip with our order on it. He was shaking it as us saying we needed to order dinner. I said we just ordered appetizers and were going to see about dinner. He insisted we had to order at least one entrée or we had to LEAVE!!

I asked where it said that. It didn't say it on the door or the menu. He said it doesn't have to state it "I'm telling you. Order an entrée or leave."

He was verbally abusive. It made quite a scene. Other tables could see what he was doing.

I'm a working professional now, but spent many years working in restaurants while getting through college and I have never seen an owner mistreat his guests in such a way.

He said it was dinner time (8:00 p.m!) and that we should order dinner. We were not ready to order dinner. He said we were taking up a table and that he had others waiting who wanted to order dinner.

There was at least 3 open tables and NO ONE waiting to be sat. We walked right in and were seated without any wait.

Considering that restaurants make a higher profit on drinks, appetizers and desserts ... his attitude made no sense. When I worked in restaurants, my managers always liked when guests would order piles of appetizers instead of meals. They are quick and more profit!

I’m not usually one to write reviews for any restaurant, but I felt I needed to share this experience to warn others of their expectations. We arrived today for the lunch buffet, specifically the tikki masala, after calling and asking about the buffet options. However, we were treated to something completely different than advertised. Although the portions were large, the content on the platter is given to you without any input from you as a customer; for that reason, we only ate about 1/8 of the actual platter due to our taste preferences. Of the other items on the platter, the most disappointing was the almost meatless pieces of chicken (mostly bones) that was supposed to be the primary serving. Additionally, when we asked for the check after feeling at a loss for having to pay for items that we didn’t even want, we were left sitting around for 15-20 min for the check to arrive, only having to ask another employee to bring it to us. Safe to say, we were very disappointed because we expected a buffet and that was not the case—and to be an honest restaurant they should not advertise (multiple banners outside/over the phone) the opposite. We even informed an employee of how their false advertising left us feeling a bit robbed and appeared to give no explanation. This place is absolutely phenomenal and really lives up to its name!!! I had tried three other Indian places in the area but this place has the rest completely beat. It is so good here I placed a takeout order 2 days in a row (your food has to be really good for me to do that). You will not be disappointed at all with takeout-I think it’s just as good as dining in and they make sure if that!

Although inflation has affected pricing (this place is fairly priced not overpriced like another Indian restaurant in the area) this place still makes sure you get your money’s worth. Everything was completely fresh and absolutely delicious!!! The chicken tikka masala was perfectly spiced and chicken was cooked just right (not overcooked or old). The vegetable samosas was also fresh, flavorful and did not have that defrosted taste. And the naan was baked perfectly and was not burnt one bit. I truly enjoyed their food and can’t wait to try other items on their menu. They do have to update their website though because you can’t completely see everything they offer-I made sure to pick up plenty of menus. The inside of the restaurant has a very beautiful ethnic ambiance and employees are very professional, friendly and attentive to service....
