I had high expectations going in. I've been a follower on social media for a while and when my wife told me we were going to Columbus I was so excited! The day finally came. So much to choose from. So I ordered The Grazer, a 3 meat platter. I figured this was the best way to try a variety of menu options. I chose the pork ribs, pulled pork and of course, brisket. There is a small upcharge for brisket. The platter comes with 3 potato buns, 3 sides (I picked Mac n cheese, potato salad and cheesy potatoes) 2 cornbread muffins (with whipped butter and I think it's sweetened with honey) 3 sauces and toppings (I went with pickled onions, dill pickles, coleslaw and sweet pickles) I don't remember the names of the sauces but they were all good. However, the "Jamaica me crazy" was really nice. Before I ordered it I asked them to describe it and they said it was savory not spicy. They described it perfectly. My wife ordered a 2 meat platter which consisted of pork ribs and brisket, 1 side (broccoli salad) 2 potato buns, 1 cornbread muffin with whipped butter, 2 sauces and toppings. For the price, I'd definitely go back. Overall, I was disappointed. The brisket we were served was the flat and it was dry. No bend, no juiciness no fat. They say good bbq doesn't need sauce. This piece of meat needed it. Not sure if requesting the point is an option or if they reserve the point for other items? The pulled pork was good and the ribs were delicious. The potato buns were crazy good! Buttery, crispy from the grill and so soft inside ... delicious. The cornbread muffins were also delicious, probably the best I've had and the butter put them over the top. The pickles were also nice. The sides, other than the broccoli salad, I found very bland. The potato salad tasted more of a yogurt base. It needed mayo, salt, pepper... something. The Mac n cheese and cheesy potatoes were also under seasoned and would definitely benefit by having onion strings or some kind of crispy, crunchy crumble on top. Just my opinion /preference. As for the staff, extremely friendly, very knowledgeable. The place itself was clean and I love the hand wash station outside the restrooms. Brilliant! We came from Kitchener Ontario. I have done road trips specifically for dining. I went to Rhode Island from Kitchener for a buffet. So a return visit is not out of...
Read moreIn the past year I been here twice. Both times spent over $50 and both times I felt cheated. Being from South Central Pennsylvania and growing up 45 minute's away from Chambersburg the Home of Martin's pastry shoppee. You could imagine how excited I was to see potato rolls behind the counter. That let me know they know something.
Then I got the rolls and they only know Martin's is used by the best BBQ spots in the nation and that's it. My rolls were brunt to a crisp and way the cook even felt comfortable serving them is beyond me. This is BBQ my guy, not just some Applebee's entree. This is a lifestyle, a person's signature and is supposed to be made with pride.
The brisket was rubbery and not that moist, tender, satisfying pull you are expecting. Brisket should not snap back in place like my skin.
The ribs were decent. Actually they are a mile way better than that "S#!++y BBQ". Those are boiled ribs. Hoggy's are smoked with a decent amount of seasoning and smoke flavor.
Cornbread muffin was a miss and then hit. It has a decent amount of corn kernels in the bread. I was not expecting that corn fritter like bite. The taste was bland and not bad, but not what you expect cornbread to be. It was missing that hint of sweetness. Which if you are not going to have the sweetness at least have flavor. Not just bland bread with corn in it. That is not cornbread. Now when I ventured to my kitchen pulled out the honey. My God Hoggy's you are sitting on a Gold mine. Add Honey to the cornbread or hand out honey packets to customers who get cornbread. That bite was one of the best bites of cornbread I've ever had!
If Hoggy's fixes the little things hone in on the craft. Love it like your firstborn, and for the love of God remain consistent with your product. They can become a go to destination in Columbus. It's the little things that push you over the top. Do you want to be okay and sometimes great? Or the Best?
From what I hear. You guys want to be the best. My question is what are you waiting for? What is the hold up?
Please for the love of everything BBQ. Stop burning the...
Read moreBy god Hoggy’s is an all American resturant that has blessed the state of Columbus Ohio with meat touched by the heavens above. Gluttony may in fact be a sin but god will look the other way whilst you’re in this establishment. I as a simple passerby could never in good faith live the rest of my days without making those around me aware of such a place. It’s a spot for those who love the combination of sweet, spicy and most importantly meat to stop by and experience a taste of the lord’s blessing. Your options include lamb, pork, chicken, ribs and really whatever else has crawled upon a farm. Ready to be shoved into a butter toasted bun with a side of your choosing.
If the indescribable food wasn’t enough to make anyone drive across state lines for a bite then by god come for the service. We as a trio of inexperienced meat enthusiasts turned carnivores due to the influence of those behind the counter. Each and every wonderful individual was doing their damndest to make sure your combination is unique to you and your tastebuds. Kindness is their middle, last and first name of their entire lineage. I regret not tipping them a portion of my life savings and can only hope this review will provide even the slightest curled lip from those employed here.
To end off my review I would’ve loved to leave an image of the full sandwich provided. But I couldn’t stop, not at the halfway, quarter way or even the last bite. I will instead provide you with the aftermath, no scrap was leftover as I couldn’t bare the thought of leaving with anything still warm on my plate.
To conclude, ensure you and future generations keep this establishment alive and well. Visit them as often as you can as I believe Hoggy’s is the last surviving remnant of the indestructible will of humanity.
Also their ranch is pretty good and...
