My wife and I had eaten breakfast a few times at The Windmill and it was usually decent, so we figured we would give them a try for dinner. BIG MISTAKE.
The waitress suggested prime rib, so my wife and I both ordered medium-rare prime rib. It came with a meatball minestrone soup, which was salty and contained no meatballs, but was still okay. Then the prime rib came out.
My wife's prime rib was grey and dry, definitely cooked well-done, almost past well-done. Mine was a bit better, but not by much. When the waitress came back over, we showed her the steaks and she agreed that they seemed to be overcooked. She took them back and offered to bring us cuts cooked more to the specifications we had ordered.
When she took the steaks back I could hear the cook - I can only assume he was also the owner or manager since he wasn't fired on the spot - yelling at the waitress that there was nothing wrong with the steaks. His voice was raised enough so that we could hear him out in the middle of the restaurant. He was shouting at the waitress, saying that we didn't know what medium rare was, that he was running a business, and he wasn't taking the steaks back. After about a half a minute of hearing him argue with the waitress, I went to the counter and offered to just pay for our drinks and soup and leave. Another cook came out and offered to get us prime rib that was actually medium-rare. He apologized for the other cook and said that he sometimes had trouble reading the tickets. I told him that I have eaten a lot of prime rib and the ones they sent out were definitely not medium-rare. He agreed and offered again to bring us out new steaks.
When the new steaks came out, they were medium at best, but at least not grey and dry like the first two. If I owned a restaurant, I would have been embarrassed to serve them as a $17 cut of prime rib. I've probably had worse prime rib at a buffet or cafeteria, but The Windmill's prime rib was close to the worst I've ever had. At this point, my wife and I just wanted to get out of that restaurant as soon as possible. We could still hear the other cook/owner complaining as we ate. The other cook offered us dessert on the house, but we politely declined, paid, and left.
In conclusion: bad food and terrible service (except our waitress, who was very nice). If you really need someplace to have breakfast, I'd try them if everywhere else was too busy, but definitely steer clear of The...
Read moreWhile the food is good, tonight's service was horrible!!! We walked around 5:30 and there were only 3 other customers already inside. Initially service was ok. Our server, Paul, did not know the specials and when we asked he went to read the board came halfway back to us then approached the other waitress who gave him a piece of paper. He hands it to me. It was on an order sheet, very small and very difficult to read, I gave up after trying to decipher the first 2 items. We order our dinner and requested Clam strips in stead of Clams. Our order comes and there are Clams not Clam strips. He takes the plate back and almost immediately comes back with the Clams removed and proceeds to say it will be a few minutes for the strips. Paul comes over to offer me more coffee to which I politely decline. He never asks if I wanted something else to drink. He then serves 3 other tables with rolls, which we were not offered. We finish our dinner and combine our dishes in preparation for take home and sit patiently... 10 minutes go by and he has not approached us. I catch his eye as he goes by to ask for a box, he acknowledges. Another 15 minutes goes by and still no box!! I catch his eye again and he throws his hands up and nods. Box finally appears and we pack up the leftovers, 8 minutes later he still has not approached us to see if we wanted anything else or to offer dessert. I catch his eye yet again and ask for the check.. he nods and goes to get it. Check is on the table with my card on top very visibly. He proceeds to walk by us another 3 times, the last time I ask if I bring it up or does he take it, he takes it and comes back. As a result I left less than a 10% tip. As we left I asked the other server if he was new, she said no... after explaining the situation she suggested talking to the manager. I shared with the "manager" our experience, to which he responded with "I'm very sorry to hear that" multiple times. And that he would talk with him later tonight. He also said "Hope you'll come back". I said we'd think about it. No offer to rectify the situation.... Now I wasn't looking for anything however an offer to come back with an appetizer or dessert on the house would have been a nice gesture!! I felt as though the tone from the manager was fake as he didn't come across sincere. We will most likely go back however it may be sometime before that happens and you can bet we will be sure to get a...
Read moreMy daughter and I ventured out this way from Claremont NH... Not the first time at this lovely place but my first time writing about it... We came in on a Saturday night to find it not very busy which was good I guess to avoid the huslte and crowdedness of the other establishments in the area.. we were greeted as soon as eye contact was made. We were told we could sit wherever was clean and ready which was almost every table due to the hustle of the servers on duty.. good job ladies.!! We were greeted by an older woman (I can't remember your name, sorry) once out orders were placed out section server kyligh (hope I got that right🤦🏽♂️) greeted us and gave us menus.. I could tell it was either her 2nd night or 1st week into it.. if I hadn't worked in the business for over 25+yrs I probably would've taken her inexperience as a sign of incompetence but none the less she soldiered through it!! I order the rolls and my daughter had the baked stuffed mushrooms which she devoured.. my rolls were served nice and hot with that nice little toasty crispy edge I like so much!.. I ordered the cheeseburger club with bacon and she had the turkey club.. both with fries.... .. both were served in a timely manner and served fresh, hot and delicious!!.. kyliegh was very attentive to our needs as far as drink refills, check, and clearing off the table when we were finished.... Whenever I'm in the area I make it a point to stop at this establishment.. sure you could go to any other places like Burger King, 99 restaurant.. but the diner is where it's at!! Also I could tell by some of the banter by the tables around me that the other people were no strangers either meaning this place has a nice little following... Keep up the good work everyone and if you're in the neighborhood stop by and give this place a try... You...
