Baja Fish Tacos — Restaurant in Costa Mesa

Honestly, I expected a much higher level meal for the prices. Wahoo's does much better, overall.

I had a two taco combo with rice and pinto beans.

Rice: excellent. Slightly buttery but fluffy and lightly seasoned.

Pinto Beans: nice. Watery style, but with good flavor. I enjoyed them.

Fish Taco #1 (fried): disappointing. The fish was not a traditional filet. Instead, it was three rectangular prisms lightly battered. They were not very flavourful and were overcooked.

Fish Taco #2 (blackened): almost there. The cook on the fish was solid, but the flavor was lacking enough salt. Wahoo's and Rubio's both do a better blackened fish taco for less money.

Customer Service: excellent.

The issue with this place is the food. It's almost $12 for a combo, but you just don't get food good enough to justify the price. Seafood is always pricey, but the taste has to be justified for the money. Here, I fear it is not. Will I try it again? Probably not. Both tacos weren't really up to scratch, even though the rice and beans were solid, it's not enough to bring me back in.

I ordered a takeout on the phone. Employee said it would take 10 minutes. I arrived on time but the food wasn’t ready yet.

I proceeded to wait 25 minutes before asking if it was ready yet. I was sitting at a table 10ft away but no one called my name or followed up with me and my order.

The employee that took my payment once I arrived didn’t notice I was sitting there waiting for such a long time.

Only after I got up and asked about my order did he check if it was it was on the counter. I demanded they remake the food which they did but they didn’t offer anything in return for treating a customer this poorly.

The restaurant wasn’t busy for a Tuesday at 2pm. There was a total of 8 people in the restaurant with maybe 3 other take outs waiting.

I understand they mistake happen but there is not excuse for carelessness. Chatting with coworkers should be second to making sure customers are taken care of. I hope...

I have maybe eaten here 200+ times and everytime seems better than the last. Even their beans and rice are special especially when you mix in some stuff from the salsa bar. The shrimp tacos or shrimp burrito are maybe the tastiest mexican food I have ever had. The fish tacos are great (I would recommend blackened). If you are looking for a more indulgent fish taco get it escenada style (fried with a cream sauce). The chicken and Carne asada are also far above average. Everything on the menu is amazing.
