I recently had a mixed experience with Caló Kitchen + Tequila regarding a reservation for a large group. As a frequent patron of the Laguna Niguel location, I have always been impressed by their professionalism and accommodating nature. This time was no different.
When planning a dinner for a party of 14 people, I contacted the Laguna Niguel location. The manager was incredibly accommodating and polite. Despite the challenge of seating a large group, the manager assured me that they would be glad to have our reservation. They explained that due to the size of the restaurant, we would need to be seated at two separate tables. This was understandable, and their professional and courteous approach made the situation very manageable. Their willingness to work with us and make our experience enjoyable was greatly appreciated.
In contrast, my interaction with the Costa Mesa location was disappointing. When I called to make a reservation for the same party, I was informed by an unnamed staff member that their policy for large groups required going online to submit a big group request. I explained that the Laguna Niguel location had not required this and was able to assist me directly. However, instead of providing a helpful solution, the staff member began making excuses and eventually stated that the managers were too busy to assist me. This response felt dismissive and unprofessional.
A simple offer to take my number and have a manager call me back would have been a much more acceptable and customer-friendly approach. Instead, I was left feeling like I was being sent on a wild goose chase, which was both frustrating and unnecessary.
The contrast between the exemplary service at the Laguna Niguel location and the lackluster experience with the Costa Mesa location was stark. I highly commend the manager at Laguna Niguel for their outstanding service and professionalism. However, the Costa Mesa location could benefit from better training and a more...
Read moreBeen here a couple times since they opened and sat at the bar. First time the service was great but the food was lacking. I had the short rib enchiladas which were very small and super salty the sauce was also disappointing tasted like it was canned sauce. As someone who likes very spirit forward cocktails I felt the cocktails were a bit too sweet. I will give them major points on their tequila and mezcal selection which is pretty good. While they have the hyped up poor quality tequilas like Clase Azul, Patrón and Casamigos they also have some good quality tequilas like 7 Leguas, Arete, El Tesoro and Fortaleza. Second time I was there the food was a bit better but the service fell short. I ordered the ceviche which I have to say had good overall flavor but they use small poor quality shrimp which I’m sure was frozen. I also ordered the halibut tacos which were ok, good beans though pretty sure they refry them with lard so beware if you don’t eat pork. I tried a couple different drinks and again for my liking they were too sweet. After my food was delivered I got little to no attention from the staff, for context there were 6 people behind the bar and the bar was about half full. The restaurant has a nice ambiance and good music. The menu claims everything is made fresh which I have my doubts on and it’s not traditional mexican but I don’t think that’s what they’re going for, it’s definitely catering to the democratic of the area. The place is new and I’m sure they are figuring things out but given that it’s not the only location I feel they should have a formula down on how to run a restaurant with good service...

From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with friendly and attentive service. Our server was knowledgeable and enthusiastic, taking the time to explain the menu and make recommendations.
The food at Calo Kitchen is truly outstanding, with a focus on seasonal ingredients and creative flavor combinations. We started with the taquitos appetizer, which were delicious, and then a chile relleno, for main course.
Throughout the meal, our server checked in regularly to ensure that everything was to our liking, refilling our glasses and clearing our plates with prompt efficiency. The service was top-notch, and we felt well taken care of throughout the evening.
One of the highlights of our experience was the beautiful patio seating area, which offered a peaceful and serene atmosphere amidst the bustling plaza. It was the perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely dinner and relax with friends.
