Decided to head down to Cognoscenti Coffee on December 6, 2023. There was plenty of paid parking (11:30am weekday), parked right in front, hassle free.
Upon entering, we were greeted by the barista right away. As always, a warm greeting adds to the experience and environment. The barista made sure to answer any questions. Regarding the environment, it’s welcoming and not aimed for a specific group of people (hipsters), as mentioned by other reviewers. There was plenty of seating inside, outside, and in their “patio” (located within the building).
I ordered a v60 pour-over, beans offered were Gesha from Chiapas Mexico, and my partner ordered a hot vanilla latte. Upon receiving the drinks, the latte caught my attention, meticulously crafted with flawless foam. The pour-over was executed well, perfect temperature that allowed the coffee to elicit notes of orange, furthermore the last couple of sips I noted more of the ginger. I did not receive any bitterness nor acidity. Upon finishing my pour-over, I took a sip of the vanilla latte, which had a delightful taste of vanilla (not the typical generic vanilla), I do believe it’s house made. If you’re reading up to this point, Cognoscenti offers pastries from Friends & Family, which I’ve had countless of times now, their pastries are flaky, soft, and delicious (make sure to get it warmed up to get the full experience). Furthermore, enjoy the drinks in a mug or glass.
Overall, the pour-over was great and the vanilla latte as well. The barista was attentive and friendly. Would I recommend this location to friends or family? Yes I would and I will definitely return to try out the other beans offered...
Read moreSpecialty coffee can be found all over Culver City, ranging from the entry-level Conservatory to the high-end and top tier roaster Bar Nine. Cognoscenti's repertoire is somewhere in between but closer to Bar Nine standards. Cognoscenti does not roast beans but they are experts in sourcing seasonal beans roasted by top-tier places such as Phil & Sebastian, Kuma, Ritual, Parlor, Bows and Arrows, Ritual, Commonwealth, etc.
Attention to detail is Cognoscenti's greatest strength. They used Bows and Arrows' St. 66 espresso blend during my last two weekend visits which I enjoyed. It started out tasting like light caramel, then a little earthy, and finished with a subtle sweet-nut note. The espresso sits really well with creamy and sweet Straus milk. Cognoscenti baristas know how to present their product, the foam quality was top notch and the latte art has been consistently precise.
One drawback to Cognoscenti is that the coffee shop is very compact with high turnover in the seating, so it didn't feel like an ideal place to stay longer than an hour although the WIFI is fast. There were a couple 4 seat communal round tables and several chairs along the wall for customers looking for the espresso-shot-and-dash experience or a quickie cortado while checking email, which is great for weekday mornings.
Cognoscenti is still one of my favorite places to pick up espresso when I'm in the area. It's my to-go place for an excellent cup without having to spend $5...
Read moreI write for a music and coffee blog called Crooners In Coffeeshops, in which I interview local musicians at local coffeeshops. My writeup reflects the positive experience that I encountered at Cognoscenti Coffee on our interview date.
Modern meets comfort with a hint of retro inside (and outside) Culver City’s Cognoscenti Coffee. Don’t let its small exterior fool you, because once you step inside you will be welcomed by a slew of cute bistro tables, industrial benches, and colorful chairs. But wait, there’s more! Veer to the right and catch a breath of fresh air in their somewhat secluded patio area. Whether you’re meeting with your bestie or having a writer’s meeting, you will easily be able to find a space to fit however many people in your party.
Now let’s get to the good stuff! Cognoscenti’s beverage menu is comprised of the classics along with fun seasonal recipes in the mix. My drink of choice, the surprisingly refreshing Turmeric Latte. I wasn’t quite sure what I was getting myself into, but I’m very glad that my day to be adventurous was an enjoyable one with its perfect ratio of milk to spice. Hungry? Check out their selection of huge (and I mean huge) pastries to fill you up for breakfast or to hold you over until your group dinner in one of the Downtown Culver...
