I've been here several times, and the experience has been about the same each time. Here's a synopsis of my experiences at the Gap Creek Coffee House:
The service is exquisitely European, and by that I mean it sucks rotten eggs. The staff act like your presence is pure oppression and that they would be indifferent if you got hit by a bus on your way out the door. If you are hoping for a smile, you're more likely to find one in a cancer ward than from the staff here.
The food is decent, if nothing worth writing in your diary about. A friend of mine described their special, some sort of jam-turkey-cheese sandwich as "a series of ingredients that taste nice but don't add up to much together." The coffee might be a little better than a gas station's, but I think McDonalds can make better espresso. For the price I would have expected substantially better, however, as you won't leave here with much more than a typical sandwich and meh cup of coffee but you'll pay through the nose for it.
The true redeeming factor is the location. Situated along a little stone brook, the outdoor seating underneath the trees is a pleasant place to spend the late morning if you don't have anywhere to be. The Christmas lights add a little bit of flair, and they can (possibly) double up as an outlet for a laptop or cell phone.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place if it were any other coffee shops or cafes around. But it's Harrogate and there isn't anywhere else within a country mile (or even a nautical mile), so until there is some competition around here, this is just about all you've...
Read moreWe had heard about this coffee house when we were chatting with a couple at the Cumberland Gap Overlook in the National Park. We had planned to go to the town to see what changes occurred since we were here a few years ago. We were very surprised and amazed at this little shop which offers an amazing variety of menu items including different coffees--cold, hot and the typical spread of kinds--along with pastry items and ice cream. Sandwiches and breakfast items are also available. The day we were here many of the outside tables were filled on the grassy area along a flowing stream with some in shaded areas and some open. Since a view of the Gap route is visible, the atmosphere was well worth enjoying along with the great hot coffee at a relatively reasonable price. I need to note the cautions posted about a couple of mulberry trees which cause purple stains in the yard, but these can be easily avoided. Childhood experiences likewise added to those cautions. If in the area, don't miss this...
Read moreFriendly, tasty and fun stream side cafe/coffee shop. Ordered a ridiculously gooey grilled cheese and a dark roast drip coffee. Sadly they use styrofoam cups (😒) which cost them a star. I requested a to-stay ceramic cup when they reached for the styrofoam (which I got) but then they proceeded to give me a styrofoam cup for ice. Hopefully they will upgrade to more environmentally friendly cups. But, I digress.
This grilled cheese was very good with 3 different cheeses and a light horseradish based "secret sauce" (less ominous that it sounds). While I was waiting for my food I found this grumpy doodle book that I flipped through and found to be hilarious. If you go you must doodle as there are many blank pages and there is also as happy one so depending on your mood you are good to go.
The view of the Gap and mountains is superb and there is a stream alongside it with an outdoor sitting area and a very nice porch so lots of good outdoor seating options (and plenty inside as well).
Highly...
