Southern Side Kitchen — Restaurant in Cumru Township

My first & last visit. I am a very picky eater when it comes to “Potato salad!” I rarely eat anyone’s except my mother’s and my own. I asked if I could have a spoonful to taste before I purchased some. Well, I was given a bit more than a spoonful, but it didn’t matter because it was nasty. There was too much salt and pepper in the potato salad. The potatoes were a bit too soft & it was watery which leads me to think that this salad was NOT made fresh today. In fact, watery potato salad comes from being refrigerated too long and having onions in it. Onions are around 90 percent water and when left sitting around, the water begins to leave the onion and it eventually becomes a part of the salad or whatever dish the onion is in. This tell me that their potato salad does not sell the way they want it to. I threw the potato salad in the TRASH. My Deacon and I both ordered beef ribs with two sides. He choose Mac & cheese with baked beans and I chose beef ribs with Mac $ cheese and collard greens. The collards were cooked very well. They were very tasty and not undercooked like most people do. The Mac & cheese was tasty as well, but a bit overcooked. I say this because the Mac & cheese was a bit dry. As if they left it in the oven longer than they wanted. The beef ribs were not good at all. I am not sure if they were smoked and baked but they were tougher than a government mule and were undercooked. These were the reddest beef ribs I’ve ever been served. Oh and did I mention that they were tougher than Chinese Arithmetic. Don’t expect me to eat from here again or offer another review. I’m good! It’s crazy how many black folk big up this place as if it is the best in Berks county. I beg to differ. I do not see many black folk patronizing this place cuz the food sucks. I live nearby. Never tried their food. When I rolled up (I'm in a wheelchair) I could tell the food would be good because there was a line.

I ordered catfish, Collide greens, french fries, and banana pudding. The staff was busy but very friendly and polite. It was a 12min wait because I didn't order ahead but I didn't mind.

They have all kinds of sides and every other Saturday they change to BBQ chicken and Ribs if that's your thing.

The food was amazing. I will definitely be back. If you're in the area stop by the farmers market and try them.

Be patient. There might be a wait for the food but it's worth it. I promise.

Oh my goodness. Where do I start? My son who lives in Redding hit me to southern side kitchen where I made my parents today. Catfish mac and cheese cabbage sweet potatoes deviled eggs cornbread pineapple upside down cake let me tell you something. I am so happy. Happy happy everything and I mean everything is absolutely delicious. I'm so glad I went. I've been wanting some soul food for a minute. Finally got it. Thank you. Southern side kitchen. You definitely outdid yourself..... And update the picture you see. That's only half of what I got. I already ate half so you can imagine how much was in this plate. Yes, well worth it...
