The late May day was sweltering, the oppressive heat and humidity making every moment increasingly unbearable. My friend and I, hungry and irritable, found ourselves wandering into a card shop. Fortune led us to discover an unknown barbecue joint, beckoning us with the promise of something extraordinary. As we parked, our attention was immediately captured by a magnificent, towering silverback gorilla statue, guarding this hidden gem with a regal presence. It was a sight to behold, as if the gorilla itself was a proud sentinel of this smoky sanctuary.
Stepping out of the car into the sticky mess that was Cuyahoga Falls, I approached the open, inviting door of Jimmy’s Backyard BBQ. First, the smell—oh, the smell! The intoxicating aroma enveloped me, a symphony that hit like a thousand BBQ grills blazing in unison. Each step towards the counter amplified the divine scent, drawing me in like a moth to a flame.
A smiling employee greeted us warmly, his kindness as palpable as the mouth-watering fragrance in the air. We ordered BBQ pulled pork sandwiches with a side of fries each. "Sounds great," he said, his voice echoing with the promise of a culinary adventure. Turning to the kitchen, he called out, "I need two orders of side fries!" He then carefully selected two buns, rolling them over a majestic wheel of garlicky butter before placing them in the toaster, achieving the perfect crisp.
Heaping mounds of succulent pulled pork were piled onto each sandwich, a sight that filled me with both surprise and delight. At the checkout counter, a sign for cornbread at $0.99 a piece caught my eye. How could I resist? By the time the cornbread was ready, the fries had already emerged from the back, golden and steaming. Flash fried, perhaps? The speed was astonishing.
With our bounty in hand, I nodded a grateful thank you and headed back to the car. We couldn't wait—each of us grabbed a fry the moment we sat down. Piping hot, we bit into them and exchanged incredulous looks. Could these be the best fries we had ever tasted? It seemed possible.
Next, the sandwiches. Tearing open the bag like children on Christmas morning, we dug in. The first bite was transcendent—never had pulled pork been so flavorful, even without the sauce. Each morsel burst with savory perfection. When we finally added the sauce, it elevated the experience to a peak level.
In that moment, we discovered a new passion: the hot, smoky embrace of Jimmy’s BBQ. A hidden treasure, now forever etched in our memories, we found ourselves forever in love, with...

Read moreThis is some of the most bland BBQ I've ever had in my life. Which is a shame because walking in to the place I got hit by a smoky scent. The guy preparing my food assured me that it was really good. I got the Brisket plate with potatoes and mac and cheese. The brisket while being moist because it was sitting it water while steaming had absolutely no flavor. The problem when brisket steams in a quarter pan like that the flavor gets drowned out my advice if you do that. Put a healthy amount of liquid smoke in with it. It also looses the bark which is essential in good smoked brisket. The herbed potatoes needs way more flavoring via butter or salt and pepper. They also feel like canned young potatoes. The mac and cheese is very deceiving. It has thick cheese it has an amazing cheese pull but the taste is very mild either not enough paprika or not enough Ground mustard. I would very much like my money back. I will not be returning there again until the food is of much better quality and treated with actual soul. After all it is soul food. Please note I am saying all this as a cook with 17 years...
