We dined at lunch. It’s pricy but I did absolutely love everything! We came for lunch. I typically go across the street for a healthy and delicious eggplant sandwich with air fries - and I’ve included the bill at both places.
The sandwich was a decent size, cut into halves on beautifully done focaccia bread. They offer a half sandwich ( no bag of chips with a half order). Had we done a half, we’d have been left still hungry.
My husband and I both loved the bread! The lentil soup was delicious and we shared a bowl. I normally get sparkling water that helps me eat but we saved money with plain Still water.
As a senior citizen on social security, this was a rare treat and one I sadly won’t be able to incorporate in my regular routine.
The place is adorable. I loved the mid-century dinnerware, and although I carry my own mini salt & pepper grinders, each table had a unique and mostly MCM vintage S&P set.
Great use of space and the server was exceptionally nice and informative.
While we typically tip 20%, I have mixed feelings about this being automatically assumed. And it is calculated on your exit bill as a polite expectation.
We’d wanted to share the soup while we waited on our sandwiches however our sandwiches came ahead of the soup. I asked that they leave the soup off then as it hadn’t arrived but they brought it out anyway. Ok… It was amazing so we didn’t grumble further, jammed the bowl between our plates and ate every single drop before tucking into our sandwiches. The soup, a puréed lentil, was probably the best I’ve had, including at home. It’s given me ideas!
The hallway leading you to the restroom has art and a plethora of cookbooks.
Lighting, fixtures, vibe are all great! Honestly I wish we could return more often than we actually will. Everything was fresh and I’m going to assume top organic ingredients with no poor quality canola etc. ( except the bag of chips which has canola… if you care about avoiding unhealthy seed oils.)
I’d you can afford it?...
Read moreOh man! I had high hopes for this spot. Love the idea of the very small, simple menu and the diner vibe and decor is cozy.
But, oof - the food was quite bland as if nothing was spiced. LIke not even salt or a crack of pepper. Almost as if catering to a children's or elderly palette i.e. specifically avoiding seasoning, spices, and noticeable flavor.
My dad and I are foodies and try to exclusively hit up foodie-type spots. The word was this is a "from scratch" kind of joint.
We got chips & onion dip to start and both had the special sandwich which was fried chicken, cheddar, arugula, aioli (or some similar sauce), and pickle on house foccacia.
The chips were a Zapp's bag and the dip tasted like bland sour cream. It appeared there were chopped white onions in it and there was a smattering of chives atop but the dip had almost no flavor. Zapps are good kettle chips but at a place with just a few menu items touting homemade vibe with a new menu every week - we expected in-house made.
The fried chicken batter also seemingly had zero spice in it - no kick or flavor. The arugula was actually bagged greens mix, the cheddar mild, the sauce also somehow nearly flavorless, and the focaccia also plain - no seasoning and if there was oil brushed atop, it too was nearly flavorless.
The pickles were very good and the only item (other than the Zapp's potato chips) where it seemed some seasoning had been applied in the creation.
The staff is very friendly and accommodating.
The seating is comfy.
I read other reviews here and wanted to leave all this detail to explain our experience.
Maybe it was just this week's specials but I am not inclined to...
Read morethis place failed me tonight and made me feel scammed, 2 of us shared a main and some sites for total $100 - $19 for JUST a burrito, not even shareable size like the chicken fried steak last week. Couldn't taste the fries in the burrito, meat was just like ground beef disrespectful to even call it a " Cali" burrito, more like Texas home made Taco Bell burrito, couldn't have included a side with that taxed burrito? $10 WHITE?? bland rice ( not even Mexican orange rice?? and beans with no flavor, $10 elote that was just okay. This place blew my mind the first time then let me down hard this week. I don't think Mexican is def not their strength . 2 people should be able to eat for $100 not share a main and 2/3 sides. The atmosphere is very deep Ellum to be charging as much as they do I get it's fresh but man what a let down not worth it, they need to check portion sizes for what they charge and flavors going into EVERY cuisine. I'll be come for American comfort food and the drinks but I'll stay away from other cuisines I can tell they lack in. Love to support small places but not when I feel scammed...
