Overall: Inconsistent, expensive "elevated" Mexican food that ranges from bland and monotonous to just pretty good. Thank you to Delia our server for comping the items that were sent back, but there are just too many good eating options in Danville to waste time/money/calories at Cocina Hermanas. We will not be back.
We wanted to try a new restaurant nearby and decided on Cocina Hermanas. Well, technically it was a second choice after Harvest had a 30 minute wait for an outside table. Turns out we should have waited. The restaurant is well decorated and the staff was pleasant. We were greeted immediately upon entering by the hostess who showed us to an outside table where we waited for our server Delia. About short time after a pleasant young man named Forrest with a bright red beard and hair dropped off some water, Delia came by to take our orders. We started with the Queso Fundido dip with chorizo. For mains, my lady opted for the mahi mahi ceviche, and I decided to try some appetizers including the elotes (street corn) and pork belly chicarones. We also tried their Pina Gordita margarita.
The good: The ambiance was nice and the staff was friendly. The ceviche was actually tasty. The restrooms were clean. You know I'm stretching pretty hard to find something good when I include "clean restrooms" in the good section!
The Mediocre: The Pina Gordita drink had good flavor but was a little weak. Ordered a second drink with a second shot of tequila and it was much better. This is a personal taste issue, so I'm not faulting them too much here, but $12 for the drink plus $8 for the second shot makes a $20 glass of margarita, and you better make a damn amazing margarita if it costs $20. The elotes were decent but came as a smear of spicy crema on the plate with two grilled corn pops on top of the smear and, in my opinion, too small of a dusting of cotija on top of the corn. Thankfully it had a stick in the corn, so I didn't get my hands too dirty rolling the corn in the crema and trying to spread the cheese around as much as I could. Taste was pretty good, but the portion was unimpressive as was process of having to make them. I'm now not a believer in deconstructing something as basic as elotes.
The bad: The queso fundido tasted ok at first. Not a lot of cheese flavor or spice; and, although there were chunks of chorizo in the dip, they didn't really add much flavor to the dip. So why does it deserve to be in the "bad" column you ask? After a few minutes it began to cool off and a distinctly grainy texture took over. A couple minutes after that it was inedibly grainy and tasteless. To add insult to injury, the basket of chips were mostly broken pieces so small that I couldn't dip them in the queso without getting my fingers dirty (see picture.) Then there's the Smoked Chicharones con Carne. I had such high hopes for "Pork belly, red onion, habanero-sugar cane salsa, radish, lime, and cilantro." Sounds delightful, huh? Well it arrived hot, and I put some on a tortilla expecting bliss. Instead I got salty. maybe a little cilantro flavor, but mostly salty. I mixed it up in the bowl (flavor must be at the bottom, like that yougurt i had as a child) and took a couple fork fulls and still nothing but salty. I sent it and the queso back. Delia was nice enough to remove it from the check. The manager and she agreed that they didn't make the Chicharones correctly - left off the salsa. They were also nice enough to offer to comp me whatever entree I'd like from the menu, but by this point I was completely done with their food. 2 out of 3 items I tried were just not good and the 3rd was OK. Thank you but no thank you. At the end of the meal, we had consumed 2 margartias, elotes, and ceviche and the total was $60 - before tip. Once again, this is a hard...
Read moreWe had an absolutely amazing brunch experience at this place! Although we initially made a reservation for lunch, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that they were serving their delightful brunch menu. It turned out to be the best brunch we've ever had.
The cocktail selection was impressive, but since it was brunch, I opted for a guava mimosa, which provided a refreshing twist from the usual orange juice. When it came to deciding what to order, we sought recommendations from our friendly waitress, and we were delighted to find that her suggestions aligned with our own interests. We ultimately chose the Birria Tacos with consommé for dipping. The meat was tender, juicy, and packed with incredible flavor, especially when paired with the consommé. We also ordered a side of rice and beans, which, while alright, didn't offer the same level of flavor as the rest of the meal.
Another highlight was the Huevos Con Costilla (Short Rib Fajitas), which featured tender and flavorful beef, perfectly caramelized onions and peppers, eggs cooked to perfection, and flour tortillas. These breakfast fajitas were the tastiest I've ever had, and they became even more scrumptious when dipped in the consommé from the birria tacos. If you can only order one dish, this should be it!
Despite our already enjoyable brunch, we couldn't resist sampling a dessert. We decided on the flan from the menu, which boasted a perfect creamy texture and a delightful caramelized top. It was simply delicious.
Next time, we are excited to return and try their dinner menu. This place has definitely...
Read moreAn impromptu dinner that turned out to be a most amazing dinner experience. First of all, the ambience and the table set up was really good. They had outdoor seating as well, but we took the indoor one. Started of our dinner with a bowl of chips & salsa for the table.
One small negative was the wait before the waitress turned up at our table. But when she did come she was one of the best waitress we had in recent times. Maria was really helpful during our ordering process and made sure everything was good at our table.
We ordered Rollitos de Quesadilla/ Quesadilla roll which was filled with meat & cheese & tasted yummy. From the mains we had 2 enchiladas (chicken & birria), burrito bowl with grilled chicken, plato dr fajitas with grilled chicken. From the tacos we had carne asada which comes two per plate and taco from kids menu. Also lemonades and hot hats to the order. Didn’t explain every food in detail coz all were awesome & quantity was pretty good, except for the taco (we didn’t add the rice or beans to the order, it is separate).
Lastly have to add that Maria asked us not to pay extra tip as it was added in the bill already as gratuity. Since we had an rip off experience earlier, I thought this was worth the mention.
Definitely one of the best Mexican food experience that...
