I miss ramen - it's probably the one food I miss the most from living in eastern Illinois outside Chicago. I used to have to travel into the city at least once a month and that trip would usually involve ramen. With that in mind, I was really surprised to see somewhere in the Quad Cities offering it on their menu. I had to try it!
I didn't realize the the area where Eddy's was located until I was about a block away. This restaurant is located right near the strip mall with a Grinder's and a Little Caesars, both of which are also not far away from a Whitey's. All of this is just west down Locust Street from St. Ambrose. It's an area of Davenport I don't travel to or through frequently at this point, but for ramen, I was definitely going.
I almost missed the restaurant, even though the google pin was definitely in the right location. Turns out this restaurant is inside what appears to have been a house for most of its existence. Not that this is bad in any way - there's a long ramp leading up to the entrance with dimly lit electric lanterns, the interior has a small bar area and several tables for small parties, the floors are large ceramic tile that appear to have been installed recently, and the ceiling consists of 2 x 2 black drop ceiling tiles. Lighting is supplied by various paper lanterns and icicle string lighting, keeping the ambiance and general atmosphere from feeling sterile or harsh.
The thing that defines the space the most, however, are all of the decorations, toys, and paintings of characters from the Dragonball anime series. I remember the series fondly - I grew up watching Dragonball Z on Toonami after school many days, along with Gundam Wing and other similar shows that rotated in and out as they got through broadcasting all the episodes in the series. It's definitely an aesthetic choice - I liked the shows, but was otherwise indifferent.
I was able to get a table relatively quickly, even though the restaurant was relatively full. I quickly decided on what I wanted for my entree - I got a spicy seafood ramen with an order of crab rangoon. My food was to me relatively quickly - couldn't have been longer than about 15 minutes.
I gotta say, the ramen was alright. It was spicy - I definitely don't have spicy soup frequently enough to get spicy dishes like this occasionally. The vegetation added to the bowl, bok choy and carrots, were done and still had a nice texture about them. The broth had a nice depth of flavor to it, as well. The seafood, consisting of a few pieces of crab meat, shrimp, and a single mussel, was hit or miss. The crab definitely tasted overdone - its texture was limp and the meat a bit tasteless. The shrimp and the mussel were appropriately cooked however - I wish I had gotten more of them.
The tea egg was probably the highlight of the bowl, honestly. I was a little worried at first - the egg was hard boiled. I was prepared for the worst with this, as ramen is the only place I really like soft-boiled eggs, especially after they're marinated. These were okay, though. Even though the center of the egg had the characteristic grainy texture of a hardboiled egg, the marinade added something positive to the component.
I was least impressed with the noodles, unfortunately. There were a bit too many in the bowl, to start. Like, more than two packs worth of instant ramen, if that's what it was. I don't want to lay accusations that this ramen was instant, but it had the sort of lack of texture and chew that homemade or artisan ramen noodles typically have. They weren't terrible, they just weren't great either.
Fortunately, the crab rangoon were on point! I'd come back for just these in the future - maybe with some sushi or one of the other offerings. And I do want to return sometime soon. Until next...
Read moreAwesome place to eat some Asian cuisine. We went there for our bday and so we ate like no other. The sushi burrito was awesome and tasted so good. The sushi fries are amazing! I've never had crinkly fries topped over with sushi (crab meat, spicy mayo and other stuff) but I'm not gonna lie, that was the best combination ever!!! We also had the Nacho mountain which is awesome, it's like the sushi fries but more crunchier and it had seaweed salad. It was a good combo. They had takoyaki, which I'm a fan of and my friend had pretty all of their buns which looked so good!!! She didn't get to finish them all but she sure savored them that night. My twin got the steam pockets which were good but when our host said he could put fried chicken in it, it was awesome!! Last...and yes it may seem we ordered the entire menu(we didn't), we got some fried bananas which had vanilla ice cream in the middle drizzled with chocolate, we then realized we missed something in our lives. (Lol) This was so good but then we also got the Nacho Ice cream....we had thought we hit the good life when we bit into the fried bananas. We were wrong...so wrong. The Nacho Ice cream was soo good. The crispiness with the sweet savory ice cream is so flipping good. Now...I know this is really long, but it's soo good! They've got alot more stuff on their menu and we had slipped on not trying their bobas, but this is a...
Read moreI have eaten here numerous times and will be back many more. The Ramen bowls are so delicious. I had the Katsu pork belly done good spicy and my son had the spicy beef. Each came with a different broth which I think is pretty awesome. Eddys isn't just throwing some Ramen noodles into a cheap broth, both broths had very distinct and delicious flavors. My favorite item in the dish is definitely the tea egg! You have the option to add whatever you want to the bowl for a price. Next time I'll spend the money for an extra egg or two!! Was the perfect amount of food for lunch between rounds of golf. Filling but not too heavy, and the "good spicy" option was perfect to clear the sinuses without burning your tongue. Also had the egg rolls which were some of the best I've had in the area. Waiter(owner?) was very attentive and our water glasses were always full.
Don't be put off by the fact Eddy's is the main floor of someone's house. The dining area, although small, was comfortable and inviting. They always have anime on the TV if you are into that and the restaurant is decorated with DragonBall Z memorabilia and other...
