When you need a cup o joe in ice cream form...
Whitey's has been on my list to visit for years and I've seen many online comments saying that if you are in the Quad Cities, you need to try it out. Well, after an incredibly long day, ice cream sounded good before I hit the interstate home.
Luckily there was one along the way and I pulled over for some sugary goodness. I walked in and was instantly greeted by stark white and the smell of cleaner. This place was clinically white and smelled like a recently cleaned hospital room. I quickly got in line and ordered a 2 dip cup of joe espresso in a waffle cone.
The guy making my cone actually dropped the entire cone into the bucket and started fresh. I told him that there was no worries. He quickly whipped up a new one and I got to snacking once I took a seat outside.
Two dips was a mistake. I didn't know how big the scoops were and let me tell you... 2 dip is an insane amount of ice cream. For $6 and change, it was a good deal but one I couldn't finish. I enjoy every lick and every bite of that ice cream as it was packed full of flavor and tasted just like an espresso but man... was it just a never ending ice cream cone. I rarely don't finish my food but this is one time I had to admit tap out as I didn't feel like going into a diabetic coma on my drive home.
I can see why all the online comments were saying you need to try Whitey's. It's the best ice cream I've ever had. Just know that one dip/scoop is fine for a snack, two is enough for a meal, and at three... I can't imagine how hungry you'd have to be for three but it would be worth it for every delicious...
Read moreI visited the West Locust Street location this evening as I quite frequently do. A young lady took my order but I however didn't see a name tag. She was probably a high school student and I believe the only one working tonight wearing glasses. She displayed excellent customer service! Made eye contact and wrote down what I had wanted, was very polite and repeated back my order to enaure she had gotten everything down correctly. I ordered seven different things; all of which were executed perfectly. There were several other employees working at the time and as I was there waiting since I had ordered so many things. Some of the other employees were having side conversations with each other about things totally not work related. The young lady working on my order did not engage in the conversations as she was busy making sure she got my entire order correct. As I watched the other employees waiting on their customers I saw very little to no eye contact which I find extremely rude. I understand they were busy and it was getting close to closing time but they could all take a lesson from the young lady that waited on me. I wish I would've gotten her name so I could call tomorrow to tell the manager what an excellent employee they have there. She deserves to be recognized for an...
Read moreI had dinner close by at Eddy's Snack Bar and when I was finished, realized I needed some ice cream to wash it down. I hadn't been to this particular Whitey's in a long time, but I feel like I knew what to expect based on most Whitey's being pretty similar.
My expectations were definitely correct - this was indeed a Whitey's like so many others. A long counter separating the prep area from the customers, freezers with the pre-made offerings on hand, and a large outdoor area with benches to consume your order at with friends and family. This was exactly what I needed.
I knew I wanted two scoops of ice cream, and I knew I wanted a scoop of Graham Central Station, but I couldn't figure out what to get for the other. Fortunately one of the employees helped me settle on my second - red velvet cake. It was made from white chocolate flavored ice cream, red velvet cake, and some kind of cheesecake or cream cheese frosting. Not gonna lie - I want this all year round. It was great!
Probably won't be in this part of Davenport all that frequently in the future. If I'm getting Whitey's, I'll probably stick to the Middle/Devils Glen location near my apartment. Still, my experience here was fantastic and I wouldn't hesitate to come back....
