Clara’s Tea Room — Restaurant in Decatur

I was excited to support a local small business by hosting my daughter’s birthday party here and having a tea party, but unfortunately, my experience was very disappointing. From the moment we walked in, the staff seemed bothered by our presence, and their hospitality was lacking. When I asked for suggestions on snacks and tea for a group of 6-7-year-old girls, I received no helpful response.

The staff appeared frustrated that the moms wanted to stay with their young school aged children, even though they were aware in advance that we’d be a party of 10-12 little girls. After speaking with the owner, the service did improve slightly, but it wasn’t enough to make up for the overall poor experience.

At one point, I even asked one of the young staff members if she was okay, given her rude demeanor, and she mentioned that she didn’t realize the moms would be staying.

While the food and snacks were very cute, and the place settings, presentation, and decorations were beautiful, the service was a huge letdown. The coffee I had was delicious, but unfortunately, the service overshadowed these positives. Thankfully, the children in attendance had no idea what was going on. My mom and I both really enjoyed our time at Clara's Tea Room! It's a small, sweetly decorated tea room on the square in Decatur with the most lovely table settings. We had the full tea, and it was delightful! The sandwiches were yummy. The scones with cream AND jam were spot on. The pastries, fruits, and macarons were just right. It was all beautiful. We were cheerfully attended to by the kindest young woman. In all a very good experience. We will be going back. Oh, and they sell Lieber Honey as well. You know you must have honey with tea. Took my adult daughters to find the place closed when they should've been open. Their wooden sign was even out front of the place, lights on too. I called to see if they were open and the owner answered from a cell phone, seemed to be driving and said no they were not. I explained what I saw and her store hours say she's open? She laughed and stated, "no I need to get that changed". So be sure to call bc her hours are incorrect. And the owner should be more concerned abt possible new customers and do better if she plans on staying in business. We were looking forward to trying...
