JJ Fish & Chicken-Water St — Restaurant in Decatur

The “staff” (seemingly one person) was congregating with 3 friends at the register when I walked in. They parted and got out of the way, and I noticed the menu is different than the JJ’s on Eldorado, so I asked if it was different, and she stated “I don’t know” as if they were a totally different franchise and she was oblivious. I then asked if I could order Wings and shrimp (like a pick 2, which is literally on the menu above her head). She says yes I can order both, but upon clarification she says I can order a full order of Shrimp and a full order of chicken. I clarified that I couldn’t have the “pick 2” with wings and shrimp that is on the menu?! And the answer was “No, we don’t serve that.” I reluctantly ordered a meal of Shrimp and fries, to which nothing further was asked of me (aka options, sauces, eat in or take out, etc). I sat down intending on just eating there, but when she did bring my food it was packed to go. The fries were hot and tasted ok (though not my favorite style fries), the shrimp were the standard breaded butterfly shrimp that you can buy at any store or restaurant supply house, she gave me a weird mayonnaise based sauce that I at first assumed was tartare sauce, but it was not, maybe a weird mayo garlic sauce at best, only tried it but did not eat it all, and also in the bag was a soft (not toasted store bought garlic bread slice), tried one bite and put it back in the bag. To back up the story a bit, just before she brought out my food, a lady came in to order chicken and fish and wanted the pick 2, to which the restaurant lady (I’ll call her RL) again said “No, we don’t have that.” The customer lady (I’ll call her CL) then says, “You don’t have the thing on the menu.” RL says, “No we don’t serve that now”. CL says, “When did you stop serving that?” RL says, “We don’t serve that now?” CL says, “What time did you stop serving that, because it says lunch and dinner.” RL says, “We just don’t serve it…”. I found it a comical discussion because clearly the restaurant doesn’t give a crap about customers from a service stand point, and to have two customers in a row expect what’s on the menu proves it. Restaurant lady clearly is worried more about chatting with her friends, than running a successful restaurant and the inferior quality compared to the homemade style food at the Eldorado location and other JJ’s proves it. Food was edible and not “bad” but there was no customer service at all and no offers of what they had choice wise. Just sad. If you are of foreign ethnicity many people may already look down at you in many ways, and I don’t imply you should be perfect but you should have a desire to prove people otherwise. I prefer diverse ethnic backgrounds, but when you want to enclose yourself and your business because you seemingly just don’t give a crap about people paying you money for the business you are supposedly running with intention, that too is SAD. I doubt I’ll support them again. I’ll go back to Eldorado and enjoy the food and conversation! I’m including 2 stars merely because the food wasn’t really bad, but overall I’d say the...

JJ Fish & Chicken on Water St. definitely knows how to serve up comfort food! I had the fried chicken, and it was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside—just how I like it.
