Over a month ago, my friend and I went to Thaicoon & Sushi Bar for lunch. It was her suggestion and it was a great suggestion because we enjoyed our lunch there. The food was good and the price was very reasonable. We were both happy about the place and the service was great! Even though I live about 25 minutes away, I'm in the area a lot and so I plan to come back as often as I can until my second visit I had an absolutely horrible experience.
I tried to come to the restaurant at a reasonable time but then there was a car wreck on I-85 when I was on my way. By the time I got to the restaurant, it was about 2:05pm. I thought 25 minutes before closing wasn't too bad. So I went into the restaurant and waited for service and by the time I spoke to a server, he said they already did last call. I said aren't they closed at 2:30pm? He repeated what he just said that they already announce last call. I asked to speak to the manager. I explained to the manager that it took me a long time to get here because of a car accident and I came by way before 2:30pm and could I at least get the food to-go? She said sorry they already did last call. She said I should've called earlier and ordered my food to-go. I was thinking... unbelievable.
I replied to her by explaining I called the prior week so I could order something to-go before and no one answered the phone call. Meaning why would I call before I come when they don't even answer the phone calls or at least my phone call. She asked what was my phone number because it was probably the missed call they missed. Okay?? why does she want to know my phone number now? Why is that relevant at that very moment? I was so annoyed, hungry, and frustrated that I said I will never come back here again. I was surprised that I actually said I would never come back since I did really like the restaurant until that happened.
She asked what I wanted to order. I wasn't even sure because I needed to glance at the lunch menu. I picked something off the menu really quick, I then paid, waited for less than 10 minutes, grab my to-go order, and left.
Reading the past reviews on here about how awful their food was, I disagree so far because the food I received was really good. The restaurant looks nice and clean and so I cannot complain about that either and that's why I would've been a regular customer. But with that horrible experience, I felt very frustrated and very disappointed. The server and the manager definitely did not seem to care about the customers or at least with my time and frustration.
I don't normally like to write bad reviews unless it needed to be said and unfortunately, this was one of them. Two stars for the good food and clean place. Three missing stars for the folks at the restaurant who do not care about...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreAugust 7, 2025 Returned this day with my wife. Ordered the Sushi Boat for 2, anticipating analogous types of sushi and sashimi as I had on Jul 30, 2025. Alas, we were (quite) a bit disappointed because the selection of fish used and the size of the sashimi pieces. The tuna seemed different (of lower quality - a cut from a frozen lump of fish?) than what they served on July 30th. Also, the selection of sushi were of cheaper version - imitation crab meat and ahrimp while Hamachi was missing. The sashimi pieces were (much) smaller than those served onĢ Jul 30, 2025. One thing that I detest is cutting corners... One recommendarion is,changing their "miso soup OR salad" accompaniment to "miso soup AND salad," which is typical of practically all Japaneae restaurants with larger (combo/special) item orders. Tonight, reducing the rating a bit.
July 31, 2025 Returned the next day to try the Thai food. Ordered Papaya Salad and Green Curry with Shrimps. They were reasonably good tasting. However, they were both not spicy enough, making the sweetness to dominate the flavor. Also, the Papaya Salad came out lukewarm, which accentuated the sweetness even more. I had to ask for their spice rack to spruce them up. A bit disappointed. Down to 4 stars now.
July 30, 2025 I was pleasantly surprised by the quality fish and taste of sashimi from a Thai-Japanese combo restaurant that could create a potential pre-conception of fusion-like taste missing the rightful mark of both cuisines.
But, the Japanese food was right on the mark of what's expected - salad/dressing, miso soup, and the fish, rightfully aged and of texture. It was interesting that they use the shredded carrots rather than radish as the base to place the fish. Also, pieces of kale were placed as the garnishment. Both actually enhanced the sashimi - eliminating the potential sharpness or bitterness of the radish taste. The flavor of the sushi rice was quite good and went well with all the ingredients. With such quality food and relatively reasonable price, the value of the food is qiite good. Next time, I will try the Thai food and update...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI've been here twice, once for a sushi craving, and once to try the entrees. Both times it was the same experience, just A-OK. Although ample parking which is very unusual to be located inside a shopping strip in Atlanta!
The location is convenient to find, just off Briarcliff and Johnson Rd near Emory. The restaurant is quite lovely inside. Light, airy and tastefully decorated with pleasant music softly playing on the background which indeed makes it a very romantic dining experience. Clean and tastefully appointed bathroom, too.
The menu is quite extensive and one has a choice of going for Thai, sushi or the combination of two. They also have brown rice, yay! The good kind, too - looks like a mix of red, wild, and brown grains.
What we had:
The dumplings: Delightful. Ordered them steamed and they were perfectly done. The chicken soup was awesome. So flavorful yet simple.
Sushi: -Cancun: The mangoes were super ripe! I probably would have wanted it to be slightly unripe to get the tartness and crunchier texture) -Double shrimp: Recommended for those who just can't get enough of shrimp, and maybe not a big fan of completely raw fish -Spicy deep fried salmon: Tastes amazing! but the roll fell apart and on the smaller size. -JB: Definitely the best.
Overall, wasn't blown away. Each rolls were about 12-14 bucks so definitely not cheap for average food. Service is quite slow as well. We had long wait times to even start of with drinks and apps, let alone order for entrees. Each step had a ~15 min wait.
Not sure if I'll be back for an inexpensive food and poor service. Def had way better...
