If details matter to you, The Dark Horse will set a new threshold for dining in Defiance! Everything about this place is carefully crafted, stylishly decorated, and comfortably furnished. The class and ambience of an urban eatery, with the friendliness of familiar hometown faces. And the food...! There is nowhere else in Defiance where you can find seasonally curated entrees like those at Dark Horse. I tend to be a creature of habit when it comes to food, so when I find a menu item that I love, I'll order it again and again. The Margherita flatbread was my favorite summer go-to, the fresh basil bring the crown jewel. My husband, with his love of olives of every variety, chose the flatbread topped with a gourmet variety, and enjoyed every bite. We have tried the charcuterie as well, and enjoyed its variety, especially the cheeses. Served on wooden cutting boards, the presentation is practical yet special. Water is served in tall vintage-looking glasses, accompanied by a carafe for replenishment. And real silver-plate flatware! Such a nice touch! We've also recently had brunch at The Dark Horse, and I highly recommend it. I had the spinach-mushroom quiche, and he chose a breakfast tart with flaky pastry base, bacon, and a sunny side up egg. Both were excellent. And there is so much more to try! Brunch featured classical music in the background, and a sunny view of Triangle Park just past the original brick sidewalk out front. It made for a delightful experience. Quiet, relaxed, and beautiful - this lovingly and creatively restored historic building, once cigar factory, then photography studio, now has new life as a chic new downtown eatery that is welcoming and relaxing (especially the back lawn in summer!), as well as providing deliciously different choices for your eating (and drinking) pleasure. Highly...
Read moreWe ate here on Friday evening. The restaurant is very nice and I read several reviews before deciding to try it. We had two orders of fish and chips (one with a baked potato and one with fries), and a quiche Loraine with a side salad. The fish was chewy, likely a result of over-whipping the beer batter. The French fries were not eatable; dried out and lukewarm. The fries were likely setting under a heat lamp for quite some time. The baked potato was hard and not completely cooked. The quiche was burned on top and dry inside (I wish I would have taken a picture). The Cole slaw was a mayonnaise slurry. The mashed peas were tasteless. I will say that the salad was fresh, crisp and delicious. I felt that the price was too high for the fish and chips, even if they would have been good ($28 per order); let’s face it, cod fish and potatoes are cheap. It’s a visually appealing restaurant that should hire a chef rather than a short order cook, especially if you want to charge this amount of money for prepared food. Even a short order cook could do better than this. Ugh. What a waste. We decided that the 5 star reviews came from people who went there and got tipsy before their meal, and could have been fed anything. They do have an extensive drink selection. So if you do go here for food, knock a few back before dinner and you will be pleased. Ps. I didn’t complain to the staff; sometimes I’m just...
Read moreNice place for drinks and social gatherings. Not many food options. They have a great bar selection. Good beers. Mainly all appetizers with 3 types of flatbread and a steak sandwich on a pretzel roll. If you are hungry and not just snacking on appetizers you have to order more than one thing. Such as a large salad and flatbread. Not a fan of bagged chips and that comes with the steak sandwich. Bagged chips are not good options for a dinner sandwich. What food we had was good, but it cost two of us over $80.00 and I left kinda hungry. Light eaters will love this place and the food is prepared from local ingredients Great for a light lunch. I would return for one of their specials. The menu I saw online was much larger then what we were given when we came for dinner. Ours was mostly just appetizers with one entree option? That was disappointing. I was looking forward to a dinner and not just appetizer items. We came during dinner hours. We did eat in the dining room and the waitress told us that was their menu. If we wanted something different we would have to come on the weekend for Steak special. The family next to use were also commenting on the bagged chips. So not sure why no one received a dinner menu who were eating in the dining room at...
