Ball Park food...only without the Ball Park!
Do you like: Wholesale bulk hamburger meat? Wholesale bulk tortilla chips? Wholesale bulk taco shells? Wholesale bulk tortillas? Bagged shredded lettuce? Machinated nacho cheese? Canned refried beans? Watching employees eat raw hot dogs while gossiping?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, Mid-Del Taco should be at the top of your destination list!
Now of course I didn't see the food being prepared back in the kitchen to know exactly what brand of food they used, but I can tell you that everything I ate indeed tasted like the items above. These items are okay for home use, but I'm not going to pay a commercial establishment for this stuff. I mean, the ground beef used in the taco burgers and tacos tasted merely like they were browned. None in my party could taste any sort of seasoning, no not in any of the food. The bean burrito had a store-bought microwave-steamed tortilla taste, and an extremely bland refried bean paste. The cheese tasted like ballpark machinated nacho cheese. The quesadillas we ordered for the kids were very greasy and left half-eaten. I ponder why quesadillas would be drowned in grease or oil?
My four-year-old, who regularly marvels at chips and cheese and quesadillas at restaurants, asked us to stop and get him a hamburger as we loaded into the car.
I was just so disappointed. I had been dying to try this place as I heard they served taco burgers! After all I grew up eating taco burgers and burritos in west Texas, and anymore you can't find them anywhere. My wife, who grew up in the Mid-Del area and dined at Mid-Del Taco often as a child, was also disappointed and was even quick to note to me that this was not how she remembered it. She was also ready to join my son for for another lunch.
When I passed through the kitchen to get to the bathroom in the back (which actually was very clean), one of the ladies pulled from the freezer a rock solid frozen thing of beef that I'm assuming she was getting ready to thaw. I tried not to stare as they were letting me use the bathroom.
I am just astonished that there is an over 85% like on Urbanspoon for this place. After reading the positive reviews, quite a few of them reference they have eaten here for 30-something years. Perhaps they've never had Mexican food outside of Oklahoma City. Or maybe to some it brings back memories of being at an OU football game since it tastes like the Sooner concession stands. But I'd rather not indulge myself with this kind of food unless I'm actually in a stadium...
Read moreI've been eating at Mid-Del Taco since I was a kid in the mid 80s. Mom would take us regularly being that she loved it and had been going since the 60s or something like that. The food is still pretty good. The sauce has changed (or maybe my taste buds have changed - not sure which) but overall, it's still unlike anything else you can get. My only complaint was a rude person working the counter the last time I ate inside the dining area. She didn't seem to be too friendly.
Edit: So I only have one question. And I'll preface by saying I do NOT expect special treatment, but I do expect some modicum of courtesy as a customer which I don't believe is unreasonable. So is the dyed haired girl's life so bad that she has to be rude to the people who come through the drive thru? Or is it just me? Over the past year, and probably 10 times I've been there in that time frame, every encounter with her has been life draining. I will be fair and say that ONE time she was actually pretty nice. Anyone else had this experience with her? Again, maybe it's just the way I look or something. But I've always been nice to her. The owners probably ought to consider that employee's attitude toward the customers. I'm actually surprised she was still employed there. Family member maybe? Anyway. That really spoils what has been a go-to place for me since...
Read moreI am very disappointed in this place. This has been my favorite place to eat since i was in Jr high and I've been out 18 years so that's a long time but over the last couple years the food prep has gone downhill. The food is ice cold when i get home and i only live like 3 blocks from there and they just seem to throw the food together and not care if it's warm or put together so when you open it doesn't fall apart before you finish opening it. On top of everything the hot dogs are always hard, burnt and rubbery because they are in that water all day i guess. Everyone knows what color hot dogs are so please rotate them because it ruins the food. And when i asked for a new one the person in the back gave me a nasty look and made a new one with the same old hot dogs. It makes me sad cuz i tell everyone about this place on a daily basis but other than the 2 girls in front ( the really skinny girl with long blond hair and the younger girl with short curly brown hair that wears shorts in the dead of winter) i feel like everyone else doesn't care about their job anymore. I don't ever do these reviews but i am really upset cuz i love this place and have said something a time or two over the years but it's getting worse not better so maybe...
