Food: Average Service: The restaurant was not too busy after 1pm on Sunday. We were seated promptly, but had to wait 10 minutes before someone came to take our orders. The vegetables and sauce came out quickly, then my dish came first. I started eating while my partner waited for his. We were also watching the Rio games on TV, so I took my time eating my dish. Halfway through my dish, my partner's dish was no where to be seen; our waitress had seemed to completely forgotten about us. I had tried first to look her way in an attempt to make eye contact; however that was unsuccessful. I walked up to the counter where boss man stood. He said he would check on it. Then waitress came to our table, told us that the dish was finished but had a "bad smell" so they had to make a new one. She asked me to be understandable since we were all Vietnamese (meaning I should expect less-than-subpar service?). At this point, my partner was already h-angry and this new information had our eyebrows raised about the quality of the food, we decided to cancel the order. My partner asked to talk to the owner, seeing that he was just standing behind the counter. However, no one came. When I walked up to pay my bill, he had disappeared, leaving the waitress there, who now said she is the one overseeing the restaurant, and that the owner does not deal with these things. Since I cannot directly communicate to the owner himself, I've decided to take it to online reviews.
To the OWNER: -In the restaurant business, there will be incidents where your customers are not happy with the food, the service, etc. I do not expect amazing food and service every time. However, the least you can do is to be receptive to feedback, good or bad, and be able to handle it in the most professional manner. Avoiding, and leaving your waitress to be the scapegoat is not it. I can think of a handful of Vietnamese restaurants from Saigon Bowl (Federal), Pho 888 (Aurora), Top Pho (Aurora) to Saigon Basil (Northglenn) whose owners really know how to handle their businesses, that maybe you can...
Read moreWe opted for the Dinner for Two, and overall, our experience was positive except for the Canh Chua Cá (Sour Soup in Fire Pot). Surprisingly, the soup lacked any sourness, prompting us to bring it up with our server. He ventured into the kitchen to seek an explanation and returned with a bowl of lime, asserting that the flavor was correct and advising us to add the lime for the desired "sourness."
I mentioned to him that it seemed to be missing a critical ingredient, Tamarind, which is essential for achieving the sweet and sour balance. The server responded, "That's how we make it here." My wife then requested him to consult with the chef to rectify the issue. The server promptly took the hotpot to the kitchen and returned it within a mere two minutes. However, he placed it on our table and left without further discussion.
Upon tasting it, we found that it was overwhelmingly sour, as if an entire bowl of lime had been squeezed into it. What was most disconcerting was the lack of honesty in their response. We would have appreciated transparency, such as if they had mentioned being out of Tamarind or having a new cook. Instead, they chose to provide an unsubstantiated explanation. It's worth noting that we were conversing with them in Vietnamese, so their response was quite perplexing, as one would expect them to acknowledge a Vietnamese person's familiarity with the taste of Canh Chua.
I've been a patron of this restaurant since my childhood, back when it was still called Đồng Khánh, and the Dinner for Two was priced at $9.95 per person. With the current cost of $40, the disappointing taste of the dish and the questionable service have left me hesitant to dine here again. My reservations are not due to the food itself, but rather the...
