Southern chicken and waffle — Restaurant in Derby

I am delayed in writing this review but so had to make it a priority to make sure that I recognized this restaurant for their kindness, services, and consideration. I had placed and order (75 fish pieces) in advance in preparation for my Uncle’s repast on September 9th and I am going to call him “M” because I don’t want to jack up his name, but anyway M was amazing and so considerate of the circumstances in which my family needed the food that he gave us a discount. From the start his communication was stellar from advising me to follow up the day before, letting me know that he would be communicating to his other staff members to make sure they got the order right and on time as requested, to the day of the food being ready ahead of time and the other staff members being so nice. Believe it or not I also ended up leaving my Dad’s favorite pen there when I was signing off on the receipt. Do you know while I called and asked that they hold it, they went as far as securing it in an area where only they had access it and could make sure we could get it back?! What can I say my Dad really loves a specific type of pen lol but he was so thankful they kept it! Last but not least the food was a hit! We had cod, whiting, and tilapia and by the end there was some tilapia left but was gone by the next day! So thankful it could be a sense of comfort in that a time of transition for us. Our family and friends loved loved loved it! I highly recommend them not only for their food but these days it’s really hard to match a product with great quality customer service! I checked this place out after stopping over at Popeye's, seeing a C from the health board on the front door, and deciding to go down the other end of the plaza instead. I know at one point this was a Crown. I used to live in Bridgeport and Crown was AMAZING! I'm unsure if it's still associated with Crown Chicken, but it was still pretty good.

I only have a few things I wish were different: 1) The chicken is good, but I thought it should be seasoned a bit more, 2) I didn't realize that biscuits were not served here. There are two competitors within less than 15 seconds of here that both offer this as a side, not sure why it isn't an option, 3) The side portion sizes need to be slightly larger. It's great to be able to get four sides with a twelve piece meal, but when feeding a family of four, the baked mac and mashed potatoes were really just enough for two (both very tasty, though), 4) swap out your regular fries for potato wedges with your family meals! I tried to get these as a side option and was told they weren't offered with the meals despite being listed under the sides?

Their chicken over rice is amazing as long as you eat it right there and then. If you take it home then the taste will not be as good. I also loved their mixed chicken and lamb over rice. The white sauce is the main magic formula.

Their sandwich is also pretty good and tasty, however if you take it home then the taste will not be as good. It's like eating fresh french fries at the restaurant, compared to eating it at home.

I don't like their fried chicken because it has too much salt or the oil is not as clean. Sometimes they surprise me with amazing fried chicken which is perfect in salt and they use clean oil. I guess it depends on the time.

Their fried shrimp is pretty good. Sometimes I eat it with chicken over rice. I gave it 4.5 stars because the fried chicken needs some work.

November 2024: decided to give them five star after eating from them so many times. The fried chicken is now perfect, not too salty. Sometimes at 1 AM I am very hungry and I don’t have any food at home. It is very nice to see that this place is open till 3 AM. it is like this place has my back when I am hungry...
