My wife and I continue our ongoing search for a good Chinese restaurant in Des Moines, and have come away disappointed yet again. It wasn't horrible, but the food was nothing special and the service kind of sucked. Definitely not recommended for vegetarians like my wife.
The first impression as already bad. We sat down at a four-top so that we could sit next to each other instead of across, as we prefer. There were many empty tables, so we didn't think it would be a problem. We were asked to move to a smaller table, and not politely. The new table was sticky. We asked that it be cleaned. The waitress gave it a quick wipe with a wet rag. Still sticky.
When I asked the waitress about vegetarian options on the menu, she didn't seem to know much, and got the chef. The chef was unaware that vegetarians don't eat fish, which is always a huge red flag. How can I trust that the food I'm buying my wife is actually vegetarian if the person making it doesn't understand the basic definition of vegetarian?
We determined that all the Thai dishes have fish and/or oyster paste in them, which is not uncommon, so that's all out. We were more surprised to find that most of the Chinese dishes also had non-vegetarian sauces. There were only a couple of entrees to pick from, and she ended up with Tofu Fried Rice.
There are other options out there with food that is at least as good, at lower prices, with better service, so we won't be...
Read moreConfused by my experience just like other low scores here... Ordered vegetable spring rolls but got shrimp (was replaced with no emotion after I found someone at the counter, but read on...), inquired for vegetable broth, got fish instead... No apology or notice for either, nothing... No silverware or napkins was brought before or after food was served, so we looked around after while & grabbed chopsticks we found, so shared those... No napkins still, so I asked again at the counter, to be told they "might not have any" - Never got a return checkup like, "I'm sorry we're out" or anything, simply kept chatting with the 1 other table during our visit, then even moved around table items on other empty tables... Not once was our table checked on... Had to go to the restroom for my family to get paper towels for napkins... If I was working, I would have been embarrassed, but AT LEAST would have done that immediately for guests... no greeting, not a thank you for coming when paid and tipped, not a slight sorry for the wrong food... Undercooked food... I'll stop there... Very disappointing... Very confused... Will...
Read moreJust ate lunch here today. The food was 3/5 - I had the Panang Curry. I'm pretty picky with Thai food and the curry was just way too watered down. The food actually was fine, but the service was horrible. I had to ask my waiter for a menu b/c he couldn't stop talking to his boss about his schedule and picking up his girlfriend after work. In the meantime, I was just sitting there looking at him twidling my thumbs. Throughout my visit, it felt like I was SO annoying being a customer making him do his job. He would be on the phone talking to another customer annoyed asking "is that it?" while serving me at the same time. LOL. It was actually so sad, it was funny. Oh - and I hate service people that try to chum you up only at the end as you pay and put in your tip. Like really? Could you be any more insincere and transparent? Kudos though - I did forget my sunglasses and he came out to...
