Used to love royal mile, was one of my favorite spots around Des Moines. But this is not my first bad experience now, over this specific person. Not sure why they would ever work in service. (although are bartender was super nice) But it was about 5 min before 2, we had finished our drinks and brought up our glasses. Before we left, our friend needed to run to the bathroom. We were waiting maybe 30 seconds, when some heavy set blonde lady gets up from the bar (I assume other off duty employee or maybe the owner) starts screaming that we need to leave, I told her we’d be happy too. We’re all servers and bartenders, we weren’t trying to make anyone’s job more difficult. But at least one of us was gonna wait inside for our friend. I told her I’d go wait by the bathroom, by the door, or in the bathroom. She proceeds to ream my friends and I, they go stand outside. She yelled and passive aggressively kept saying what she was gonna do for the next 2 min or so, till my friend walked out. Mind you for the last half an hour, we’ve been the only other people in the bar besides those other two at the bar and nobodies said a word. We leave to then be yelled at as we’re walking out by somebody standing on the top stairway from red monk, I assume the bartender that was working up there. Basically about how terrible we are.. It was just a very upsetting experience, this use to always be my spot to watch soccer last year. Liked a lot of the bartenders, but I will likely not return w fear of running...
Read moreEDIT: weekly customer, my favorite food on this earth was their Tikka sauce with a side of naan to dip. One bald bartender with the beard up charged me from the normal $8-$10 to $15. At that point, I paid one of the servers to get me the exact recipe- and boy am I glad to have done that. If anyone wants the recipe to the better curry sauce, and not the brown gelatinous sweet curry they have now- read below: Butter - 4 oz Garlic, minced -1/4 cup Shallot, minced - 1/2 cup White wine / cooking - 1 cup Crushed red pepper - 1 tsp Coriander, ground - 1/2 cup Cumin - 1/4 cup Paprika - 1/4 cup Garam Masala - 1/4 cup Tomato Sauce - 96 oz Heavy Cream - 3 quarts Salt, kosher - 4 tsp
I WAS still frequenting the establishment weekly, as it's more cost and time efficient for me to pay you. As the price wasn't set, the cheaper I'd see the ticket ($8-$10), I'd tip 100%+. If the price was higher($11-$12), I'd tip around 75%. Now that Ivw cut ties, I feel comfortable sharing my process. Many servers can attest to this, and because I've interacted with so many- and they've shown such kindness over the last five years- I'm disappointed to say I will no longer be eating at Royal Mile, what was once my fav downtown spot. I stuck with you through the closure of vaudeville, but that disgusting jello curry you have currently just...
Read moreThis is a review for Royal Mile and the upstairs pub Red Monk. My husband and I rented the entire upstairs for a work party on Saturday, Aug 12. We had a crowd of about 40 people. From booking at the last-minute (2 days in advance) all the way to paying the bill, we were so happy and impressed with the entire experience.
The owner who worked with us to book the space, Courtney, was very helpful and responsive. And she was so accommodating even with our incredibly last-minute planning of the event.
Collin, the bartender who took care of us all night, was the star of the show. He was amazing. So nice, fun, and was somehow able to single-handedly manage our entire crowd on his own. He asked us what music we’d prefer that he play during the party, kept us informed about where our tab stood throughout the night and when we were getting close to our budgeted amount, and slang drinks like a pro for 4 straight hours. He was the MVP of the evening.
The minimums for reserving the space were very reasonable, and the food and drinks and atmosphere were top-notch. Everyone had a great time. We will definitely reserve their event/party space for future...
