U of D Coney Island — Restaurant in Detroit

The waiter asked me to be generous while signing the receipt cause I used my card. I ordered 2 coney dogs with everything and this is what it looked like. The new U of D is not AT ALL what it used to be since the new owners have taken over. All of the regulars agree to this. It’s so disheartening because U of D has always been a staple in Detroit. Every time I go there it’s a bad experience. Today the cashier was so confused. Couldn’t keep up with what her job was, what she was supposed to be doing and I waited too long for 2 coneys. The other waitress actually asked, “what is he waiting for” and the woman said I totally forgot about me. Then asked what did I order. If this was her first day working I could understand but the icing on the cake is she had time to hold side conversations about how drunk they got over the weekend. Using the B word and everything. But had the nerve to tell me to be generous in my tip. I would’ve left a tip hadn’t she asked for one. Let your service determine your tip ma’am. I’ve tired understanding it’s a new business but come on, you gotta do better. Hire better staff. Actually put mustered on the coneys. I won’t be returning here again. I’m afraid to bring my friends or buy breakfast for my family on the weekend...

This Coney has really good food been coming here for years but recently the only downside is that they close early sometimes almost an hour early. Considering that they don't have long hours like most Coney Islands you would think they wouldn't cut corners and shut down an hour early. They close at 4:00 but will shut it down at 3:00. To travel from one side of town to the other to get food because it is of that great quality just to find out that they are closed an hour early. And this has been repetitive for them lately. So don't waste your time and traveling thinking you have an hour+ to get some food call ahead because you just never know with them but that's not the rep to have as a business. That will eventually lead people to just not consider this place as an option at some point. Only gave two stars because of the inconvenience of the hours change and if that is the case it should be notified...

Let’s talk breakfast — because U of D Coney delivered the vibes and the flavor.

I usually DoorDash, but this time I pulled up in person — and I’m glad I did. DoorDash only lists the corned beef skillet, but I was after that real corned beef hash. Luckily, the staff was super helpful (and honestly, pretty attractive 👀). They cleared up the confusion with no attitude — just good energy and quick solutions.

Now for the food:

Corned beef hash = Crispy, savory perfection. Every bite hit.

Grits = Thick, luscious, creamy. Southern grandma-approved.

Coffee = Deep, dark, and strong — the kind that wakes you all the way up.
