This place is worth it...def very good sushi. Having lived in LA for 12 years I am often disappointed with Florida sushi restaurants. But when you walk into a place, like Sushi Joe, and see the majority of patrons are Japanese you know you found a good spot. Menu is in Japanese/English (another good sign). Sushi was very fresh and they had a large diverse menu - a place I know would survive well in LA.
My only criticism...and this seems to be more of a Miami (and Florida in general) issue - is cream cheese. Almost every roll has cream cheese in it. This seems to be a florida thing that I just can't relate to - but apparently the latin/cuban/puetro rican populations LLOOVVEE cream cheese in their rolls. Almost all sushi restaurants in the area have some kind of personal relationship with cream cheese...I mean, really, after two rolls one person has probably eaten half a block of cream cheese - who would sit around and just do that at home? That's disgusting. The upside though is that you can just ask for the roll with no cream cheese - but just seeing it so prolific on the menu is a big turn off.
Anyway, we travel from Tampa to Miami every week for work, so having just found this place for the first time I can say we will def be back .....sans...
Read moreEven when I have lived 2 mins away from this place for decades, I had only gone to eat here once before tonight. And it was some years ago, late at night, when other places were already closed, so we tried it out and we were pleasantly surprised with it. It's expensive for the amount of food and the decor and service you get, but still, tonight we gave it another try.
AND THIS IS THE LAST try we give it. Other than the kind service by the young hispanic waitress, everything else was not OK. My wife's food - a bowl of chicken, egg, and rice (how can you mess that up?!)--smelled and tasted really bad. She could not eat it at all. And the manager came back to our table to tell us that she smelled it too and it was perfectly fine and that it was us that didn't like it. Our tab was for almost $100 and this woman came to our table to argue with us?! My sushi and rolls were also not that good (just OK, for some of them). The rest of the food we ordered (my parents) was just OK but sub-par to most other similar restaurants. Overall, the experience tonight was a failing grade one. We are not coming back. That asian woman was rude to us and the food was not good....
Read moreI was a long time customer of the place, but stopped going because of the lack of service and attention. Food was decent, but the atmosphere made you thing you where in a Chinese restaurant. Our host/server as they so call themselves was lacking (we had to seat ourselves and ask for a menu and water a few times). They utterly ignored us to chat with some other customers that they knew or maybe even knew that they would get a great tip from. My companion was upset that they didn’t pay attention to us as we had to wave and I mean wave them over to get a check. At one point she almost got up and went over to them to ask for the check, but they were in a deep conversation in Chinese as I caught a few words since I have friends whom are Cantonese. We left the tip they deserve as tips are based on the level of service. We haven’t gone back because of this and from time to time see that nothing has changed at this location. If the managers at this location read this it’s time for a change if you want to stop losing customers. So if you really like sushi, go for the food which was great and not the service which made our meal feel like it...
