I have been coming to Beaner's since it opened about 15 years ago. Full disclosure, I have gotten to know the owner and his staff over that same period, but that is almost an asset to add to the revue. The coffee is good and there are lots of different local sandwiches and soups and sweet pastry items to try, too. Today I had a piece of rhubarb cake that was delightful.
But for me Beaner's is not necessarily about the food and beverages, don't get me wrong, those things are great. But really you come here to enjoy music or to connect with somebody in a relatively quiet but also vibrant setting. And it is a place with a true local vibe and a bit of a West Duluth vibe, too.
The other thing is that this place is obviously run by people who love music and culture. As an occasional sound guy and DJ myself I know that they put tremendous emphasis on having things sound good. Decent equipment and there is always somebody who knows what he or she is doing running a sound board so you can hear well but that doesn't mean it has to be loud.
The service varies depending on who is behind the counter, but it is always friendly and thoughtful. It does not feel like you are in a chain here, it feels like you are in a neighborhood place that is invested in the neighborhood and wants to be a hub of art and culture and that insists on...
Read moreMy family was the worst thing there. The atmosphere went back up to 5 stars after they fed us. Paintings on the wall were awesomely distracting. If I hadn't wanted to catch up with my family, I could have just looked at those. I'm such a sucker for a family meal.
The tirimisu, which I didn't try, looked so good! Plus, I think it comes in the kind of clamshell container you can make oven-baked cartoon guys out of. I don't know, but I plan on licking the inside of one of them very soon to read the number inside the triangle made of arrows on the bottom ASAP!
I will order it to-go so I don't ruin the mood in there. There is an excellent view of a giant mural of a canoe, and I think some birds? It's cool. It's a bookstore that was closed when I was in the area. I plan on washing my hands after the tirimisu, stashing my upcyclable(?) clamshell trash and then pretending not to fall asleep in that bookstore and see what happens when my family is not there to...
Read moreAmazing. Best coffee shop I've visited ANYWHERE in Duluth, maybe ANYWHERE, PERIOD. Whether you're a local or a tourist, THIS IS A PLACE YOU MUST CHECK OUT! I stopped briefly for a Blended Vanilla Latte' that ended up being one of the best coffee drinks I've EVER had. Besides that, the girl who took my order and brought my beverage was VERY pleasant, AND last but not least, it had to be THE shortest wait time I've EVER experienced in a coffee shop (not to mention: it was VERY busy, as I could tell, I am NOT alone in my fondness of this place.) Can not WAIT to go back in the evening, sit at the bar, and try a craft beer on tap while I listen to some local acoustic music, which is playing there regularly. The sign says "all ages are welcome here" and there is truly something here for everyone of ALL kinds. The food looked amazing too. I will also definitely be bringing my family here for lunch sometime very...
