I’m a YC native and I’ve been going to Red Hills since it opened, have spent literally thousands of dollars there, brought friends, shared the location when I worked in the wine industry and when I worked in the restaurant industry while living in Portland, etc. I’ve been integrated in the community/ scene pretty profoundly, yet like to keep a low profile.
Over the last year or two, I’ve been thoroughly questioning if I should even bother to walk over RHM. I’ve been convincing myself to support a business I used to LOVE and being almost consistently disappointed in some way or another. I adore many of the people who work there, very rarely have I received any snark, eye rolls, or dismissive behavior, but it does happen from time to time. Being someone who has worked in Hospitality in the past, I understand how stressful things can get, or how disappointed you can get when your product doesn’t meet the level or value it should have and you feel like you’re ripping people off. I’m not sure if this is something staff may worry about but I think product/value ratio might need to be revisited, and value appropriate substitutions for people who may not consume certain items. It might need to be discussed with staff so they know what to offer someone if an item is left off a plate. Let me preface that I understand that the restaurant menu is centered around pork, but even when I was vegan in my 20s, my needs were accommodated and the food still looked and tasted amazing. Yesterday morning, a little before 8:30am, my daughter and I stopped in while we were on our walk. I got my coffee and a delicious spinach feta croissant, she opted out of the typical pastry and asked for a breakfast plate. In the recent past, breakfast plates have had fruit, pancakes, egg, and bacon for $8. The portions were adequate for a kid, the quality of ingredients and presentation of the food fit the price, even without bacon (which we don’t consume). As a single parent, I absolutely appreciated the value of this plate. Since I knew it had been awhile since we had ordered the plate, I expected the plate to change. The current kids plate has 3 items, “Waffles,” bacon and seasonal fruit for $8. We ordered the plate without bacon and asked if we could substitute the bacon for extra waffles. I would assume this would make a good substitution, because I suspected the bacon was probably more expensive than batter for waffles. I was told that probably wasn’t possible, so I asked for extra fruit, which was granted. When we got the plate, it was two quarter pieces of A waffle, not “waffles” and what I would assume was an entire apple cubed with a few bits of kiwi. Firstly, as a parent I would recommend slicing the apple, then fanning the slices on the plate. Children are visual eaters, it’s easier for them to hold onto and the cubed apples are a choking hazard. As the paying participant, I would at least expect the plate to look appetizing, it did not. Blemishes and worm holes were not cut off the apple. It looked like something a teenage babysitter would prepare for a kid.
I expected better, given the establishment and prices. The gal at the front although pleasant, seemed to be a newer employee. Had management or kitchen staff known about the substitution request, they may have offered something a little more substantial, or I would assume they would. Perhaps not. That should probably be discussed with staff. As someone who has worked in the industry, I probably would have preemptively asked if the order was correct or offered an alternative, if I knew my plate was going out like that.
I’m sorry. I don’t like that I feel moved to post about this, as I am non confrontational. Like I said, I adore some of the staff and don’t want to ruffle any feathers, and didn’t want to at the beginning of what would be an even busier day. But as I have been frequently disappointed lately, I feel I must say something.
I’ve included a picture of the plate, with only a piece of waffle and a couple bits of...

Read moreMANAGER YELLED at me--NEVER going to return. We have been here about five times over the last few years. The line is always long, but worth waiting because the food is good. We live in east county, so anytime we are nearby we make it a priority to eat here because it is delicious and cute. HOWEVER, when we visited on Sept 18, 2022, it was so busy that there were hardly any seats available (understandable). We had a party of 8 and walked through the back area several times, watching for picnic tables to be cleared and wiped. Was no one clearing?? Finally found a small table on the side which was clean. Great, let's sit here and hope something bigger opens up!! The area in the front of the house was empty and would have accommodated us but the tables were all dirty and there was even a number left on one although there were no diners in sight. My family was prepared to squeeze onto one small picnic table when I stood up and said screw it, I'm going to clear those indoor tables I had been keeping my eye on so that we can have enough room and stay cool (it was exceptionally hot that day). Plus we had already waited at least 20 minutes for tables to be cleared. Now, this might be NBD any other day, and NBD to any other manager, and NBD to me. I didn't mind clearing it. We have a small business and are acutely aware of the worker shortage in Portland. However, once I began clearing the table I was YELLED at by the manager to "LET US CLEAR THE TABLES!" Not only that, she had a completely sassy attitude and was so rude to me. I understand she was most likely under extreme stress and it was very busy and she was perhaps short staffed, but to YELL at a customer is completely unacceptable. Especially when I had been waiting for a worker to clear that area for several minutes already. She should have instead approached it with grace and kindness and just asked if she could send a staff member over to take care of it. We spent $130.33 to get yelled at and I completely lost my appetite. Not only that, it took 45 minutes to get our food. Oh, and none of the staff ever said a kind word or attempted an apology for the duration of our stay. No one even said thank you. If we yell at our customers in our business, they won't return. I vote with my dollar, and that means none of my family will be back to Red Hills Market and I feel that I have to share our experience in order to caution other...
