In my younger and more vulnerable years my bartender (Stefan) gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since. “Whenever you feel like drinking beer,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world that haven’t been to Growler Grlz yet and bring them with you.” He didn’t say any more, but we’ve always been unusually communicative in a reserved way, and I understood that he meant a great deal more than that. In consequence, I’m inclined to reserve all judgments, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me and also made me the victim of not a few veteran bores. The abnormal mind is quick to detect and attach itself to this quality when it appears in a normal person, and so it came about that in college I was unjustly accused of drinking terrible beers, because I was privy to the secret griefs of wild, unknown men. Most of the confidences were unsought — frequently I have feigned sleep, preoccupation, or a hostile levity when I realized by some unmistakable sign that a Bud Light was on the horizon. Reserving judgments is a matter of infinite hope. I am still a little afraid of drinking terrible beer if I forget that, as my father snobbishly suggested, and I snobbishly repeat, a sense of the fundamental taste is parcelled out...
Read moreI’m saying this as someone who was a regular at Growler and never posts negative reviews. They have a good (overpriced) beer selection.
My friend and I brought our two dogs, who yes, bark at strangers who try to pet them without asking, but are otherwise perfectly friendly and have never been aggressive to any person or other dog. They barked (once) at a lady and the bartender told us we have to leave because it’s “ruining his business”.
Meanwhile, the lady is sitting outside, right next to our dogs, happily drinking her beer and they are not barking at her anymore. Can someone please explain what exactly was ruined other than my day? Also want to point out I have brought my dog here twice before with no problems.
It was very unpleasant, rude, and frankly the only business that has been “ruined” are that 2 customers who came here three times a week don’t want to return. I’ll get my beers elsewhere, though I’ll miss the...
Read moreBest bar in Durham. Friendliest staff you've ever met, dog friendly as heck, and a warm welcoming atmosphere.
They have 42 taps of mostly beer, but they always have 2 or 3 ciders and root beer as well, along with various wine and canned drinks too.
The beer slingers here know their stuff and will almost always have a recommendation if you need one.
Breweries do tap takeovers frequently on top of them switching out beers daily, so you always know your going to be able to find something new.
Trivia Thursdays are the bomb, live music every Friday is a great time, honestly it doesn't matter what day you go you're going to have a good experience.
And while they don't serve food beyond bar snacks like chips, Randy's next door has awesome pizza to soak up some of that...
