Surprised to see any negative marks in the Reviews because my boyfriend and I just had the best experience!
I'd never heard of this place, but happened to drive by while running errands in Eagle. What an incredible find!
I'm always drawn to restaurants with atmosphere, house-made signature cocktails, & a fresh, local menu. But usually upon finding restaurants that meet that criteria I am left disappointed in one aspect or another. Some favorites that can sometimes disappoint include Grant's Neighborhood Grill in Meridian, Barrel 55/Barrelhouse, Alavita, Ruth's Chris. Usually my disappointment comes with bland, cooked vegetables, or dishes trying too hard to be eclectic.
The best meal I have ever had in Boise came from the now closed, Le Coq Rouge, which provided the most deliciously intricate French food. It has been closed for probably 5 or 6 years now, and therefore I have gone that long without finding a menu that could be executed like theirs was.
Oak Barrel of Eagle delivered! I was SO surprised to find that every dish we tried was PHENOMENAL. The best meal I've had in 6 years, since the closing of Le Coq Rouge!
The atmosphere was so perfect, every detail planned out. I was happy to see a Bloody Mary as a signature cocktail, since they are my favorite. Usually I don't finish the Marys I order, but this one was too good to not finish!
We ordered the 1/2 order of their Charcuterie. I can never resist ordering a cheese board but am ALWAYS disappointed by size and quality. This half order was bigger than the normal charcuterie that restaurants send out, and it was soo amazing. There wasn't a part of it that we didn't finish, including the salad w/ balsamic dressing.
We also ordered the Mac & Cheese which was really amazing. Not spicy enough for me (I'm not a Mac & Cheese fan to begin with, but I can't resist a spicy, jalapeno Mac & cheese! I'll try to add that next time!), but the flavor wasn't overpowering or too salty. It had just enough to make you appreciate every ingredient. My boyfriend is a Mac & Cheese fiend (he orders it everywhere we go no matter what, yet is discerning about what he receives), and he loved it! He ordered the Turkey Brie Focaccia, and I had the Cuban. I LOVED the Cuban. Pork was not too salty, and the dijon, and dill pickles were incredible. I had the sauteed mushrooms as my side. Usually I am wary of vegetable sides because (besides Le Coq Rouge) they are never prepared to their full potential, always bland & "unfinishable". These were the best mushrooms I have ever had, I could have had them as an entree! I think that is the true test of an amazing chef, the desire, knowledge, and ability to make every nuance and every vegetable come to its full potential. I'm excited to see what the obviously talented team at Oak Barrel can come up with in terms of Vegan options, as that is what my boyfriend and I are trying to move to. But I have no doubt that they will be able to bring out the amazing individual flavors that vegetables naturally carry. I'm excited to return and try more! And as for the price?? Unbelievable. Cocktail, 2 appetizers, 2 sandwiches & a side of fries all for $60! What an incredible deal, I was so surprised. I would have gladly paid more for such an incredible meal!
Our server, Jackie, was so friendly and helpful! The timing on each of our dishes was perfect. We weren't crowded with all of our selections at once, but had time to appreciate everything we ordered. In fact, just as my boyfriend mentioned how hungry he was the appetizer was out. Amazing service!
Beautiful atmosphere & location. Love that there is a patio & separate lounge. Oak Barrel really has it all. It's the perfect night out without the downtown drive or vibe. Can't wait to come back and try out Wednesday Karaoke...
Read moreI would have given this place a 2.5 stars if I could. I honestly believe that it doesn't deserve a 3 star rating. Unfortunately, the only "great" thing about this place is the service. The service people were very friendly and attentive. The food was not great or even special. Oak Barrel Lounge is not going to be a place that I will frequent. I'll make some points quickly. 1] The layout of the place itself is a little odd, not that it really matters, but it was something that I noticed immediately. 2] The interior is very bright as well, and it just doesn't have that "upscale" feel that I would have associated with the location by the look of the building. 3] The food is presented quite poorly - very plain, and leaves nothing to imagination encouraging one to eat. The food looks just like it tastes, unfortunately. 4] I ordered scallops, and I could smell them before they were placed in front of me, which wasn't a good sign. They just weren't good - they were okay. They didn't taste "earthy" or "fishy," they were just plain and kinda fatty, which is something that I've never really seen from scallops - stuck together and sinewy. They had the slightest amount of sear to them, and absolutely no salt. They were nestled in a fatty, oily little bathtub that made them look like they belonged in bathwater. I would have gladly paid $5 for an appetizer that cost $17 - I wouldn't be half surprised if they were microwaved. To be honest, I'm not even upset about it. I feel confident that there are people who don't know what food is supposed to taste like, and they work here - unfortunately, people are paying for what could easily be replicated by a few mistakes and a 5 minute youtube video. I'm not going to bore anyone with what my...
Read moreWent to Oak Barrel Restaurant in Eagle last night bc they have a lot of GF choices for hubs. The restaurant has a low key vibe, nicely done interior. We had rezzies, were seated promptly, but the restaurant wasn’t full. I really wanted to like this place but it fell short in several areas. Charcuterie appetizer came out, 1/2 order, it was sparse and we asked for half GF and half regular breads which was provided with an up charge. The gf bread was awesome; the focaccia was dry and crumbly - like something I could see used for biscuits and gravy. It didn’t hold up for charcuterie or the dipping sauces that are provided with an entree order. I had the flat iron steak ($42.) with red mashed potatoes and sweet carrots. Sides were not bad but they didn’t come out hot on either of our orders. The 8 Oz steak came out well done instead of medium rare so it was tough. Hubs had Orange Roughy ($24) which he pronounced pretty good; his sides were steamed broccoli and risotto, nothing special but also pronounced not bad. At these menu prices ‘pretty good’ and ‘not bad’ should not be the adjectives for the dining experience here. Our server was nice but not too attentive - she announced it was her last night, she was a hairdresser and returning to that the next day -maybe that contributed to her laizzez faire service, shrug? On the upside our cocktails were perfect and refreshing and the house Chardonnay - a CA wine - was very nice and reasonable at $7 a glass. This is a small place and the menu limited, and I saw other choices that I think I might have enjoyed more than the flat iron steak. All things considered this restaurant will be a one and...
