When a New Yorker hears about a new bagel joint opening up you KNOW a visit is happening!
Bagel Kitchen, in the Wealthy Street foodie enclave, is a bright, cheery space with tin roof tiles exactly like Yonah Shimmel's knish bakery.
The 0640 smell of fresh bagels is just the greeting I needed, and the daily brew (this morning, Peak of Andes) is enough to get me through the menu.
Sadly, no Nova Scotia lox nor capers to be found; this is a different clientele. (Lots of kids from the nearby high school come by.) Rather than an omelette on a bagel, I opt to go basic - it's all about free bagels, after all.
The open-faced everything bagel, toasted well, with chive schemer that arrives (very quickly) is GREAT! Strong flavors, crispy on the outside and soft, chewy, and seasoned inside.
I'm savoring the coffee as I write this, and as it cools there absolutely no bitter tang at all; drinkable down to the bottom. Thank you, brewers.

As I was putting my order in, a male employee with longer hair and earrings was openly eating a bagel with cream cheese while preparing orders. While chewing, he dropped pieces of his bagel on the sandwiches being made. He then proceeded to grab a napkin and wipe the cream cheese off his face with the same hand and gloves he was making food with. The other male employee, was also eating while wearing the gloves he was preparing the food with. See picture attached of employees. This is...

The cheese-crusted bagel was top-notch ā crunchy, savory, exactly what you want. The coffee? Surprisingly smooth, even with four shots of espresso ā not a hint of bitterness.
The atmosphere is maybe a little bit to bright and les cozy for a coffee shop, but also very modern and designed.
Solid place, good vibes. If youāre around, itās...
