Lupe's Burritos — Restaurant in East Los Angeles

I’ve been going to this place since I was 5 years old until 2019 and I was born in 1968 and stopped going here after John the grandson of Lupe took over when she died because the prices went way up and the service was not like it used to be. Anyway, I was in the area a few weeks ago and decided to give it another try. I ordered a taco and 2 bean and cheese and the taco was terrible and the meat was gross and was not ground beef like they have always been for years And when I asked for a 3rd thing of red Chili, the girl that was working register that doesn’t like me gave me a hard time but still gave it me but was not happy about it. Anyway, a few weeks later, I was in the area again and wanted to try it again, like a dummy and ordered a bean and cheese and two GROUND BEEF tacos after asking what kind of tacos they have since that last taco I had was nasty (apparently when I went a few weeks ago and ordered a taco, the same rude girl, did not ask me what kind of taco I would like, and just gave me whatever she wanted, which was apparently gross shredded beef) and she only gave me one chili and when I asked for a couple more chilies (total of 3), she only gave me one more Chile and said that if I want another one she would have to charge me $.50. I said no thanks and was furious. This is ridiculous. I paid $3.95 a taco and they couldn’t of gave me a chili per taco, give me a break. The rude girl that was working the register said that you only get one chili per burrito. What if I wanted a jalapeño? Is it either or? Because when Lupe ran the place, she gave you as many chilies and jalapeños as you wanted . I really miss Lupe And her old crew that used to treat me and my wife Carrie like gold. I’m sure John has lost a lot of good customers like me and my wife but obviously he does not care because I called the other day to talk to him about this, and he could not even call me back. Very unprofessional. Please call me John to let me know what’s up because it should not be like this. If I order 4 items I should be able to...

Others have suggested I try this place so I finally broke down and gave it a shot. My verdict; nothing special, not a good value and oddly seasoned food.

How can a place that advertises Mexican food make food so tasteless. That's my opinion of this place.

For starters, the food is not seasoned well and the only thing you taste is hot peppers. Kinda weird with the over abundance of heat from the peppers with no real seasoning flavor ( if that makes sense). The meat was overcooked, very "chewy" and thus, not very tender or appealling.

I couldnt recommend this place to anyone. Food is mediocre at best. Parking is terrible and the wait for food took over 19 minutes. I can go to IHOP, dennys, or countless other establishments and get a full sit down meal and be served in a timely manner. It would certainly be a more economical meal than this place.

Ok, back on track... When the food arrived, they serve up rather tiny portions. The burrito was about 5 inches long and 2 1/2-3 inches wide. This was a small burrito by anyones standards.

Let's see... a puny burrito, bland seasoning, and almost a 20 minute wait for such a microscopic specimen. DO NOT VISIT if you're hungry for authentic...

If I rate on taste, 3 stars. I've had better. Not to say the size of the burrito was small, which it was, but that's okay, America has been conditioned for big, oversized it, and yes, I am a victim of this marketing, but the carne asada was tough and tender. I hope you know what I mean. (I HIGHLY SUSPECT they're purchasing the cheaper cuts of meats or they're boiling the meats before placing on the hot burner for warming and seasoning) Lupe's must have a lot of friends for such a high rating that I feel cheated of flavor. ...And I'm still hungry but that's ok, I think it's better that way. Their red chili tasted mildly hot with a hint of fish. Fish!!! Yes. Fish. Oh well. It might be a regional thing. I hope to know where so I can say no thank you. Customer service is zero. Odd experience from my initial contact. When I was ordering I felt as though she was thinking I am cheap. Also when she deliver my burritos and bottle of water she just slid it over to me and walked away without a word.
