My husband and I recently received a menu in the mail for Taza and was immediately interested in going to try this place in East Lyme that we hadn't ever heard of before! We visited for lunch today and I am very, very happy that we took the chance to go out and try the food here.
Everything we ordered was phenomenal! We got the lamb shawarma platter as is, the lamb kabob platter with the lentil rice and fries instead of the salad, as well as the lahm bi ajeen as a side order. First off, I have to say the quantity of food is insane. You get so much food and we took home plenty of leftovers for a whole extra meal later. The flavor of the meat was perfect as well as how it was cooked. The sauces they provide are delicious on their own but even better with the meat. Both the white rice with noodles and the lentil rice were delicious, the salad had a refreshing and bright salad dressing, and the fries had a very nice seasoning on them (also they go great dipped in literally any sauce they give you with the platter). You also get fresh warm pita with your platters which are great with the meat, the sauces and all together. I didn't try it, but I feel like everything on the plate could have been stuffed in a pita and eaten together and it probably would have been a perfect bite! The lahm bi ajeen was probably my favorite single bite of everything we got because it was not only delicious, but the must unique and different thing we tried there. You also get two to an order and wow is it filling! I was also nearly tempted to get some baklava for dessert as it looked so delicious while we checked out. I truly enjoyed everything I had there today and look forward to coming here again in the future and trying more from the menu like the falafel.
The restaurant itself is wonderfully decorated with many interesting Egyptian decorations and I love the accent wall near the entrance! Our service was wonderful from the employees to the very minimal wait time for our food. There's plenty of seating if you want to eat in vs. getting take out as well.
I would 100% recommend checking this place out and trying some of their food. Hopefully you will be hooked just as we were. Their website also has very helpful pictures of all of the menu options to help anyone who may not be familiar with the dishes. If anything, if you like lamb, you literally can't go wrong with either the shawarma or kebab platter. Also seriously recommend trying the lahm bi ajeen, it is so so...
Read moreI've been coming to Taza for about three years now. Not once have I ever had a meal that wasn't fantastic. The wraps/pitas are not over the top and "creatively" designed like other restaurants tend to provide, but each one has always been flavorful and densely packed. The simplicity is in its favor. The fries being seasoned? A simple and inexpensive step that really shows attention to detail and makes the side something to look forward to rather than something to fill up on. I would also eat the garlic paste served with them as my main meal if I could! For a while I would only get the sandwiches and maybe a side because I figured that a platter would just be a bunch of extra items tacked on that I didn't need, but I admit I was wrong here. The rice, pita, and side salad really complete the meal and are worth skipping the fries for. Also, not once have I finished my meal in one sitting, anything I've ordered has always been 2-3 meals worth, especially if a side was ordered as well (recommend the kibbies or falafel!) This time around was the chicken taouk (perfectly grilled), yellow rice, lentil rice, cucumber salad, pita, garlic paste, hummus, and a side of fried eggplant.
I always take my food out to enjoy at home, but the atmosphere inside is very relaxing and always clean. The decor is simple, but fits the establishment well!
Taza is and will remain one of my favorite local places to eat. Any time I try another restaurant, it almost feels like cheating, but it's always there waiting with another fantastic meal when...
