Many people after being away from authentic food, tends to forget what it supposed to taste like. I see reviews of all sorts and wonder if some of them are just left because they can. While everyone will have different experiences and opinions, some things are just too hard pressed to ignore. Like what a good doubles smells and tastes like. Limins has never mastered the art of doubles making even from the get go. Thick doughy bara seems to be the trend to the point where, after a while, and not having much alternatives close by, you just get one and cross your fingers and hope knowing full well, it will be the same but hoping for a different outcomes. I took my niece, her husband and kids there once directly after picking them up from the airport. They were visiting from Trini. It was more to see their reactions and it did not disappoint. Their reactions that is. All 4 doubles went in the garbage after the first bite. The response was they cyah handle de Yankee doubles and " how dey cud be trying to fool people wit dat". The saltfish is usually good but the bakes way too doughy. Beef pies and currants roll are usually good but the pone can sometimes be off. I find the veggie options to be a safe bet than the meat options. The curry can just be too overpowering sometimes as if they sprinkled additional curry powder just towards the end of cooking so you get that strong uncooked slightly bitter taste. Same with the channa sometimes. Tends to carry a bitterness to it. The meats are not always consistently well cooked. It hadda bunjay lil more sometimes especially the beef and goat. The roti skins is usually a safe bet. The chicken soup is usually on point. Because we are usually visiting family 2 towns over, we would stop in because the folks are usually friendly even from way back in Vidya days and it was almost like popping in to say hello and grab a few things. We've come to gravitate towards safer choices like the currants roll, pies and veggies options and the packaged goods like the solo, orchards and other bottled drinks as time went on. I remember Maria from way back always pleasant and later on some of the others as well like Denise. They always worked very hard. Used to be called Caribbean Cuisine back in the day. For a proper doubles though, you have to go to NY in Bklyn at De Hot Pot or Quees to TriniDelite.. Even the guy with the food truck on Central Ave in E.O. does a...
Read moreHONEST REVIEW!!! I am not one to leave negative reviews on businesses, especially Caribbean Restaurants, but I have to be honest with my review!!!! My first experience with this establishment began over the phone when I contacted the location to inquire about their hours that day. I was informed by the person on the phone that they close at 7pm. I drove 45mins to their establishment and I arrived at 6.40pm and guess what? Yup, they were CLOSED!!!!! Not only did I waste my gas, time and energy, but the fact that they had the nerve to close 20mins prior and instead of coming to the door and atleast explain why you closed early, I was waved off by a woman gesturing that they were close!!! Really??? smh... Ok no problem, I decided to give them another try and we ordered several buss up shut meals. And when I tell you the food was TRASH, I mean it TERRIBLE!!! It looked like they gave me a soft taco and said it was BUSS-UP -SHUT. It looked and tasted more like a SADA ROTI.. It was thick, dry, hard and nothing about that was BUSS-UP-SHUT. The goat meat was EXTREMELY tough, dry and tasteless. I was born and raised in the Caribbean and this restaurant was a poor representation of our dishes. My entire family had the same opinion about the food. I purposely didn't throw it out so when I get home I will take a video to add with this pic. I will let you all be the judge. I don't know if it was the end of the day and that's why the food tasted like that. But i will NEVERRRRRRRRR go there nor recommend this place to NOONE, especially...
Read moreThe other day I got, Limin’s Cafe Caribe, for dinner. I ordered the Oxtail Dinner w/ Rice & Peas, and Cabbage. The dinner was fairly middling to say the least. The Oxtails bordered on the fatty side, and was not very tender, while also having little flavor. The cabbage had a nice crunch to it, but very bland. Could’ve been cooked just a little longer. But the cabbage was very refreshing, almost salad like. The Rice & Peas were oily (prob due to the Oxtail Gravy), but it was really aromatic and had a nice texture to it. The people who take the orders are extremely nice and attentive, great customer service! The ambience of, Limin’s, is welcoming and has a home-y vibe to it. I love, Limin’s, have been going here for years. Their Stew Chicken is phenomenal! But for my first time trying their Oxtail Dinner, it was a fairly disappointing experience, especially given their other awesome menu items. Even with the Oxtails not living up to, Limin’s, regular expectations, I ranked them a little higher because the quality of the Oxtail was exceptional and their customer service is amazing. As you can see from the photos, they give nice big pieces, I just wish it had more flavor and was just a little more tender. All in all, Limin’s, is a great place to eat, and I will keep going back. Was just a little disappointed in the Oxtail Dinner. If anyone is in the, East Orange area, and looking for some good Caribbean food, def check out, Limin’s...
