We had dinner yesterday for my Father-in-law’s birthday. It was busy, but not crazy busy. Our server had ZERO personality from the start. She was half attentive and seemed irritated to have to serve us. Let me just say, we are as easy going as can be, so we were confused by her demeanor toward us. We ordered simple drinks, and an app while we awaited the Man of the hour (who arrived within moments of said order). The drinks came, but no app and no mention of the app. We ordered another app now that we were all there, and to be clear, we all arrived within moment of each other, it wasn’t like we were taking up the tabs and time (at this time we also put in our dinner orders to make things go easier) thinking ok the other will come with the one we just ordered, maybe she waited for him to arrive to put that order in. At this point it’s been 20 mins. 10 mins later the OTHER app comes, no mention of the first app. Ok maybe she forgot, no biggie. We finish the app we did receive, which was pretty good. Waitress refills drinks for one end of our table but NEVER EVEN GLANCES at the other end to ask if we needed refills, and was always too quick to walk away for us to even ask). Food comes out for all BUT the person who recommended your establishment (also who ordered app#1). Waitress had to ask what he ordered, which was your special BBQ braised short ribs. He waited 15ish minutes for his dish to arrive with no apology real apology or accountability taken from this meh waitress who we know forgot to put this order in in the first place, come on, lady. Again, we are easy, we had no substitutions or weird requests so what’s going on? The portion of ribs was laughable atop an absolutely ridiculous amount of fries, he was disappointed to say the least after waiting longer than necessary. We were all pretty much at the end of our meals by then, (my dry stuffed chicken and my husband’s chewy steak tips among the meals served) so he barely even touched his meal and he was way too nice to say anything and asked that we also don’t make a big deal about it, so nobody said anything at the time. However, I feel it necessary to say something. Now, I have NEVER taken the time to review a business online until today. That is how upset I was about the service we received. The attitude I noticed from the waitress was immediate. I understand people have bad days, but we did not deserve that dinner to be what it was. Even my 17 year old sister in law was taken aback by it. We will for sure not be back. Hopefully this was a fluke because it seemed like a really nice place. Too bad for...
Read moreIf I could give this place zero stars, I would. I genuinely don’t understand how this restaurant is still open. My experience here was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had, and I don’t say that lightly.
Let’s start with the service. Or rather, the complete lack of it. From the moment we walked in, it was like we were invisible. The host barely acknowledged us and didn’t crack even the faintest smile. We stood awkwardly for almost ten minutes before someone sluggishly came over to seat us, and even then, we were pointed to a table like we were an inconvenience. Our waiter — and I use that term generously — was rude, inattentive, and clearly hated their job. No greeting, no introduction, no suggestions — just a scowl and a rushed “What do you want?” like we were bothering them.
Now let’s get to the food, which was the real star of this disaster. I honestly don’t even know how to describe it besides wet, soggy, and completely flavorless. Everything tasted like it had been boiled in disappointment and served with a side of regret. I ordered what was supposed to be their “signature dish” — and I kid you not — it tasted like someone microwaved a wet cardboard box and dumped a half-melted ice cube on top for garnish.
The vegetables were limp, like they’d been sitting in a puddle for days. The meat was gray. Not brown, not golden, not crispy — gray. How do you even mess up color? Nothing was seasoned. I’ve had hospital food with more flavor. Heck, I’ve had plain toast with more flavor. This food had the texture of something you’d find at the bottom of a sink strainer.
As if that wasn’t enough, the drinks were flat, the water had a strange aftertaste, and the table we were seated at was sticky. The cutlery was spotted, and I’m pretty sure my fork was bent from someone trying to pry open their own sense of hope before giving up.
To top it off, when we finally flagged the waiter down (after nearly waving a flare in the air), we asked if we could send back a dish that was still cold in the middle. Their response? A dramatic eye roll and a mumbled “It’s supposed to be like that.” No apology. No fix. No effort. Just more proof that this place has given up entirely on pretending to care.
This restaurant is the culinary equivalent of a soggy sock. Avoid at all costs. Do not be fooled by any positive reviews — either they were written in sarcasm or by people who’ve never tasted food before. If you’re craving disappointment with a side of frustration and a dash of mild nausea, this is the place for you.
Everyone else? Run....
Read moreWe love Maguires! This place does not make a bad meal! For appetizers we love their Clam Chowder which I think is one of the best in Massachusetts! The onion strings are homemade thin sliced with a delicate crispy coating & the chicken tender appetizer is a simple straightforward classic tender but homemade and absolutely delicious. With Maguires even the simplest dish is cooked with love & delivers every time. For entrees we generally go seafood. The fish is always fresh! One of my favorites is their Fish & Chips which is traditional English style and reminds me of my days at Oxford! The baked haddock is excellent as well with a light buttery crust and perfect rustic, home style mashed potatoes. My friend really enjoys their Salmon salad which comes dressed in a beautiful array of toppings with a creamy Asiago dressing. We’ve also tried their steak tips which are spectacular and burgers which are hearty and absolutely delicious. You really can’t go wrong. For dessert I recommend the apple crisp-it is phenomenal with caramely, perfectly spiced apples and the most delicious crumble crisp on top - served a La mode this dessert is a sumptuous delight to finish your meal.
& dont forget the service! We almost always get efficient spectacular service - their servers are quick, efficient and full of personality. There is one outlier - a female server maybe in her 30s who often works the patio area closet to the doorway on weekend nights, she is a little less friendly and a lot less quick, but we won’t hold one bad apple against the whole bunch. We may have just caught her on bad nights!
Overall Maguires is a true gem! We look forward to every meal there and every meal truly delivers! Great job...
