this place was SO GOOD.
I went to eat here for my first time with my family because my parents heard about this place and they wanted to go.
we ordered a bunch of stuff like meat skewers, fried eggplant, and stewed chicken with potatoes, mushroom, and glass noodles.
to start off, I do not like eggplants. whenever my parents made eggplant, I would not eat it because of the texture (they know I don’t like to eat it so they rarely make it at home lol). when they ordered it at this restaurant, I was hesitant to try it because I knew I didn’t like eggplant. HOWEVER, when I tried it, the outside was really crunchy and made the entire thing taste really good. This was one of the only times when I actually liked eggplant. The outside had a bit of sweet sauce that was pretty good.
the meat skewers were seasoned beautifully. my taste buds died of happiness. you gotta get them. I recommend the beef/lamb.
another item worth mentioning is the stewed chicken with mushrooms, potatoes, and glass noodles. I had a dish similar to this when I went to china this year, and let me tell you- this was as good as the one that I had in china, if not better. the flavor was SO GOOD. my personal fave was the glass noodles because I love glass noodles. the broth was on par with the glass noodles. the flavor was immaculate. I can’t even describe it. you HAVE TO GET IT. the waiter even got us a whole new bowl of broth (around half a gallon!!) when we finished drank all of it from the chicken stew. FOR FREE!!! the soup was so good that my family finished it again. i attached an image below to show the beauty.
lastly, the tanghulu wasn’t the strawberry/grape stuff. it was the legit hawthorn with the sugar coating! it was crunchy and just so good! if you want legit tanghulu, come here.
you guys have to come here if you wanna try chinese food that tastes legit. the waiters are super nice and the experience...
Read moreThey have more than just skewers! It took us sometime to try since they opened. Partially because they are always packed, but also because some friends told us the food was just okay. Finally we tried it ourselves. Everything tasted awesome! First of all, people need to understand you are experiencing Northern Chinese cuisine. In case you are not familiar with it, the food is not Canton, we are not Sichuan, we are not Northwestern, but Northeastern, the big area north from Beijing. Their cuisine is famous for stews, so make sure you order a soup in clay pot. We ordered chicken with mushroom. They offered to add more chicken stock as we drunk all the soup with no extra charge. Really nice people. The sweet sour pork is another must order. And dumplings - we northerners are serious about dumplings, and they passed my test. The special flavor is the Chinese northeastern sauerkraut with pork: freshly hand made and freshly cooked. As of BBQ, again, it’s northern style: make sure you select ingredients we northerners typically use. We did mushroom, chives, and eggplant for vegetables. For protein, we did tendon (the soft one), scallops, oysters (northern China has coast line where people do eat shellfish and other seafood), and lamb on red willow tree branch. I love how they prepared a in-door grill surface to keep the skewers warm as people enjoy the food. They give such large portion that we had to pack most dishes home and ate for another day. The price was extremely reasonable for what we ordered (high quality ingredients and sea food). Highly...
Read moreAmbiance is quite nice inside but expect a wait of you go on the weekend or dinner time. Waiters can speak English but most speak mandarin. All are very nice. Food is served rather quickly which is nice if you are hungry.
We ordered a few kabobs (gizzard, beef tongue, beef intestine, and beef tendon). All have the same seasoning and not overly spicy. I would pass on the beef tendon though as it was quite chewy and hard to swallow. Our favorite was the beef intestine as it went very well with the seasoning. There is a hot plate on the table that is kept warm with small candles, which they light as soon as you place your kabob order. I didn't find that it kept the kabobs warm at all, but they did only light 2 of the candles when there were many other candles there.
The young chow fried rice didn't have much flavor but paired nicely with the braised pork belly, which was served over vermicelli. We found the sauce for the braised pork belly to be quite salty so the rice helped make it less salty. Our last and final dish was the stir fried string beans, which as you can see from my picture, was loaded with red chili peppers and peppercorn. We didn't realize it was a spicy dish nor that it came with peppercorn as we are not a fan of the peppercorn flavor.
Overall, it would have been more fun if you could actually cook the kabobs yourself over a grill. There are many other dishes to try so if you like spicy, definitely try this place out. I only gave this place a 3 star as I wish there was more variety in each...
